Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass Millionen von Deutschen die Ostgebiete unter katastrophalen Umständen verlassen mussten. Weniger bekannt ist dagegen eine ungewöhnliche Episode, bei der ebenso die Bewohner einer deutschen Stadt ihre Heimat verlassen mussten, um Wohnraum für Polen freizugeben. Diese Polen waren zum größten Teil zuvor unter dem Naziregime selbst ihrer Heimat als Strafarbeiter oder Kriegsgefangene entrissen worden. Das Erstaunliche ist, dass die zu räumende Stadt im äußersten Westen Deutschlands, im Emsland lag, also sehr weit von Polen entfernt. Trotzdem, oder gerade deswegen gab es dort für wenige Jahre, vom Frühjahr 1945 bis ins Jahr 1948 eine Art polnischer Enklave, dessen Zentrum die Kleinstadt Haren (Ems) unter dem Namen Maczków bildete. Dieses Thema ist in umfangreicheren Arbeiten bislang nur von zwei Historikern aufgegriffen worden. Auf deutscher Seite von Andreas Lembeck und auf polnischer Seite von Jan Rydel . Dieser hat eine wesentlich umfassendere und auch objektivere Abhandlung geschaffen.
In dieser Arbeit soll das Schicksal der Stadt Haren, beziehungsweise der Stadt Maczków und ihrer sowohl deutschen als auch polnischen Einwohnern dargestellt werden. Vor allem soll aber deutlich werden, welche Umstände zu dieser eigenartigen Fußnote der Geschichte geführt haben.
