Dense insights into political reality and human nature.

I have been in the grip of the most incredible book I have read in many decades, "The Travels of Mendez Pinto." The sheer density of this work caused it to fall into its own stupendous gravity and disappear from the literary canon. Mendez was personaly present at an unimaginable number of first contact points with "primitive peoples" who he presents with the greatest dignity and honor; unheard of amoung the European colonialists. His insights into multi-culturalism, international relations, anthropology and human nature are played out against a backdrop of cut throat piracy. That this masterpiece has slipped out of the Top Ten list of Great Books into a forgotton dark corner is a shame upon every educated person who has overlooked this towering monolith. If just a few people take the time to read it as Poe instructs us to do in his "Valentine to --- --- ---"; "Search narrowly the lines! - they hold a treasure Divine - a talisman - an amulet That must be worn..at heart. Search well the measure - The words - the syllables! Do not forget The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!"; perhaps it will finally gain the fame it so richly deserves.

So much more exciting than Marco Polo

Why has nobody heard of Pinto? He claims to have been the first European to land in Japan, and spent years sailing around the Asian seas, being captured and sold into slavery more than a dozen times, accompanying Francis Xavier on his final journey away from Japan, and generally doing much more than any one individual can be expected to do and survive; then he went back to Portugal and got married, wrote his book and carefully kept it hidden until he had been dead for decades, when it was published and became a hit, at least in 17th-century Portugal. Above all, he keeps telling stories about kind, generous, merciful pagan Asians and nasty, vicious, brutal, Christian Europeans. He had an agenda, and it was not glorifying colonialism! Thank heavens that the book has at last been translated into English, only about 400 years too late. So why is it already out of print?

Relatively good edition, but beware that this is a work of fiction

This appears to be a pretty good edition of this work, though I have not read it.
Readers should be cautioned that the accounts in it are more or less fictional and that Pinto never traveled to any of the places he describes. Many of the stories he tells are provably false and he appears to have just concocted them based on general rumors and tales circulating at the time.
