About the Author
Donald E. Westlake (1933–2008) was one of the most prolific and talented authors of American crime fiction. He began his career in the late 1950s, churning out novels for pulp houses—often writing as many as four novels a year under various pseudonyms—but soon began publishing under his own name. His most well-known characters were John Dortmunder, an unlucky thief, and a ruthless criminal named Parker. His writing earned him three Edgars and a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.
Westlake’s cinematic prose and brisk dialogue made his novels attractive to Hollywood, and several motion pictures were made from his books, with stars such as Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson. Westlake wrote several screenplays himself, receiving an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of The Grifters, Jim Thompson’s noir classic.

The Kids Are Not Alright

Murder Among Children was the second of five Mitch Tobin novels from Tucker Coe (Donald Westlake) and it’s an excellent mystery. Tobin is a former NYPD cop dismissed in disgrace from the force after letting his partner get killed while he was off with a girl instead of on duty. He is embittered and cynical but with a certain internal integrity.

In the first book, he is pulled into helping a mob boss investigate an internal matter (Kinds of Love, Kinds of Death, which is also excellent) in exchange for enough money to allow Tobin some personal financial stability. In Murder Among Children, he is dragged by a relative into dealing with what at first seems just a petty shakedown operation, but which very quickly escalates into multiple murder.

Of especial interest is Westlake’s take on the then-topical issue of the “generation gap,” which pits scruffy anti-authoritarian “hippies” against the “establishment,” especially the police, with Tobin caught in between. Westlake keeps up the suspense throughout and provides a very satisfying and plausible solution, which is basically what one asks for from this type of book.

Mystery With Guts and Heart

Donald Westlake is well known for his crime novels. Here is the second in his Mitch Tobin series about a disgraced detective finding himself pulled back into crime investigation, and it's an entertaining, very human read.

Mitch gets pulled into mystery when a young cousin is accused of murder. Her boyfriend has been stabbed to death along with a naked prostitute, and Mitch's niece is bloody and holding the murder weapon. A simple case, right?

Wrong. What follows is a delicious cocktail of murder, corruption, and heart as Mitch tries to put the case to bed. He wants to get back to what's important: building a wall around his backyard to keep people out. This crime stuff is so intrusive...

Westlake was one hell of a storyteller. A Murder Among Children is a fine read.

Not Recommended

I am a fan of Mr. Westlake's but I cannot recommend this book. I think it was written in the 60's and then reissued recently. It has the racial and social attitudes of that era. You will not like this book unless you are able to distance yourself from the offensive statements.

I was also displeased with the main character. I think he was a dress rehearsal for Matt Scudder, Mr. Westlake's more successful protagonist. Like Scudder, Tobin is a former cop who left because of a bad incident. Like the early Scudder, he is depressed and unable to function much of the time. I guess I'm just tired of angst.

About the Author
Tamas Bartfai was a student of mathematics, physics, and chemistry before translating his skills into biochemistry, pharmacology and neuroscience. Trained in Stockholm University, Yale University, and The Rockefeller University, he is presently a professor at The Scripps Research Institute, the University Oxford, and the University of Pennsylvania, and an expert in medicinal chemistry and the neurological sciences. He has been working in the development of new medicines and vaccines for many years as a former Sr.VP of Hoffmann La Roche, and long-term consultant at Astra, Novartis and, presently, Pfizer. Eight of the drugs Dr. Bartfai developed are in clinical use and three are in trials. He has trained and collaborated with many scientists throughout his scientific work on the topics of fever, neuropeptides, and prostaglandins, while publishing over 400 articles in over 80 journals.

Dr. Bartfai has held many prestigious academic positions. He is a member of Academia Europae and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a fellow of AAAS for pioneering work on neuropeptides, and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics. He was professor of the Karolinska Institute, which awards the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. He has been awarded a number of prestigious prizes including Eötvös Medal for mathematics in 1966, Budapest, Hungary; Royal Swedish Academy’s Svedberg Prize for biochemistry in 1985 and Ericsson Prize in 1996; and the Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar Award 2002.

Graham V Lees acquired his BA, MA and PhD degrees at the University of Cambridge. His postdoctoral work on the biophysics of ion channels was followed by a lengthy career in scientific, technical and medical publishing with Elsevier (Amsterdam), Raven Press (New York), Academic Press (San Diego & London) and TheScientificWorld (San Diego, Boynton Beach, Newbury & Helsinki). His scientific writing has been actively increasing, including contributions to the textbook Fundamental Neuroscience; co-editing with Edward G. Jones and Lorne Mendell, and contributing to Neuroscience to Neurological Recovery for the Society for Neuroscience (SfN); and co-authoring The Future of Drug Discovery: Who Decides Which Diseases to Treat and Drug Discovery: From Bedside to Wall Street with Tamas Bartfai. He is interested in politics and social aspects of drug discovery. He has a profound ability to translate complex processes and ideas into more simple English that can be widely read.

The authors’ previous book Drug Discovery: from Bedside to Wall Street, Elsevier/Academic Press, 2006, has been published in Japanese (Chem-Bio Informatics Society) and Mandarin (Science Press). Their later book’s Japanese and Mandarin editions are in preparation.

The world turned upside down

First off, this isn't a typical Amazon title, rather it is the debut novel from Aio Publishing, which puts out limited, signed editions by various science fiction and fantasy authors. Specifically, "The Summer Isles" by Ian R. Macleod was limited to 500 signed hardcovers, and at the time of this writing, some copies were still available from the publisher as well as on the internet. It is also worth noting that Aio has made part of their mission to make books that are both ecologically friendly and visually appealing, and "The Summer Isles" doesn't disappoint. The covers are wrapped in some sort of synthetic suede, with the binding a glossy black with stamped gold print and finally, the interior pages are printed on a heavier, creamier stock than generally seen in most books. All these elements combine to create a book that offers an experience that goes beyond the words found inside.

That said, a pretty package isn't enough to carry a novel, and happily, "The Summer Isles" is as engaging on the outside as it is on the inside. On its surface, "The Summer Isles" is a remarkably detailed alternate history, in which Germany won World War I, and fascism arose in Great Britain (or "Greater Britain" as it has come to be known). And Macleod deserves a tremendous amount of credit for this creation. He creates interesting parallels between Nazi Germany and Great Britain, but doesn't make them so obvious or literal as to make the story dull. At the same time, he nicely winds up his alternate history with his characters, such that he can reveal it without resorting to the exposition which bogs down many other novels in the genre.

That said, it's what goes on beneath the surface that really draws the reader in. Macleod is exploring not just the forces of history, but our very understanding of history. At heart, what he has produced is a historiography of his own alternate history, which is a fascinating way to unfold a story. Even his narrator is two different people depending upon the source, his real name of Griffin Brooke having been changed to Geoffrey Brook by forces quite beyond his control. Likewise, he is a closeted homosexual (and quite understandably given the British regime) and as such, his own personal history is not what one would expect. Finally, there is a tenuous thread connecting him to the effective dictator of the British Empire, John Arthur, and only Brook knows that man's own secret history.

In the hands of a less gifted novelist all of these convolutions and meditations would be distracting and tedious, but Macleod has weaved them into a tale so engaging it is impossible not to be drawn in. He explores what is really a dual nature in human history, the tendency not to make waves, but the converse ability of people to rise above that comfort zone, to direct the forces of history, for good or ill, for at least a while. At the time, our ability to act (or not act) upon this stage is limited by imperfect information, and as such the law of unintended consequences will win out as often as not.

I could go on, but I suspect that this is a novel that will mean many things to many people, and I likewise don't want to go on so long that I give the impression this is a dry, theoretical novel as nothing could be further from the truth. "The Summer Isles" a fascinating alternate history, an engaging character study and a thoughtful meditation on the flow of history, not to mention a strong debut from a new small press.

Intriguing and disturbing

The Summer Isles is a fascinating and disturbing book; easy to see how it won awards. It describes an alternate world where England lost World War I and became fascist instead of Germany. The protagonist is an isolated gay man in a world where gays, Jews, gypsies and the Irish disappear into camps. There's one world that people admit to, matched by a hidden world that's ticking towards annihilation.

Fascist England is still disturbingly British. Their demagogue is diffident, self-effacing man named Arthur, surrounded by fascist knights of St. George rather than SS men. He's either inspired or a psychopath, and quite hard to say which.

There are flashes of outright brilliance as the writer counterposes chaos theory or turbulence theory to explain this terrible change that's come over England. The ideas are just mentioned in passing, nearly throwaways, but dazzling and disturbing enough to keep you up at night.

My only quibble is that while his description of polite British fascism is intriguing, the author's insights into the making of a demagogue are inaccurate. But then, no one understood the likes of Hitler, so perhaps that doesn't matter.

The physical production of the book is every bit as beautiful and elegant as described by the previous reviewer. If you find pleasure in fine books, this one is a worthy collector's piece.

Forgive me for not discussing this outstanding book itself -- it deserves the full review that I haven't yet put enough thought into writing. In short, "The Summer Isles" is a genre-transcending masterclass, like "The Light Ages" and "The Song of Time" before it. Truthfully, I do not know. This book -- and this writer -- are worth your attention; please read!

This book, together with only a few others, provides a powerful introduction to the growing field of ecocriticism. The chapters are varied in target study content but share a common rigor in analysis and a common clarity of prose. I have refered my students to this work and indeed found it to be very useful as a background reader when I penned my own recent book of ecocriticsm concerning contemporary nature writing about water - Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water (nominated for top environmetal book of the year). Given its probable widespread usefulness to environmental scholars, The Greening of Literary Schloarship should be part of every 'green' academic's library.

About the Author
Raphael Lemkin (1900–1959), US jurist and Holocaust survivor, served as adviser to the U.S. War Department during World War II and played a crucial role in the discussions leading to the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Donna-Lee Frieze taught a graduate unit on genocide at Deakin University in Melbourne, lectures frequently on the Holocaust and genocide, and is a 2013 Prins Foundation Senior Scholar at the Center for Jewish History in New York City. She has digitized Lemkin’s entire autobiography, the original of which is held in the New York Public Library.

Raphael Lemkin And His Muse

No one with a broad concern for the human condition could remain unmoved and without deep gratitude for the achievement this book represents. It offers the very touch and smell of the soil in which Raphael Lemkin's central concept germinated and conveys the calculating, insistent, unrelenting personal initiative it took for him to keep it alive.

But, beyond all that, I was struck by the irony that, when addressing anything but genocide and the law, Lemkin's writing seemed to take wing, as in his descriptions of childhood, his depictions of nature, suggesting to me that he sacrificed a profound literary creativity in order fulfill the mission he set for himself.

The Story of One Man's Mission To Save Humanity from Itself

I met Raphael Lemkin in 1958. I was a student of Public Law & Government at Columbia Univ. Dr. Lemkin was an inspiration as a person. He had a mission to protect the cultures and peoples of the world from the heinous crime that befell his family and European Jewry during WWII. This book reveals his courage, his persistence and his positive attitude towards being able to do something important for the world in spite of all his struggles and hardships. He argued that If killing one person is a crime in most societies, what about the crime of murdering a whole people? The United Nations in its infancy was the perfect venue for supporting a Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, a term that he had coined. I thoroughly recommend this book to any one who is interested to know how one person persisted in changing the world through personal persuasion and the application of law. His belief in the law is a much needed reminder that all cultures have developed laws that circumscribe human behavior in order to survive with dignity and order.

Raphael Lemkin was a regular visitor to my parent's home when I was growing up. He was my grand-uncle. I remember him well, and my parents and their friends speaking about him and his work both when he was and wasn't around; equally after he died (all too young). So, I knew well the story of his life and work. After his death all of his papers and books, etc. from his apartment in NYC lay preciously guarded under my train table in the basement of our family home in Hempstead, N.Y. - all except one - his autobiography was held by a rather unconscionable and greedy Mr. Gabriel, who wanted to find a buyer for the autobiography which he had custody of. Though having seen all of his other papers (now in several archives, donated by my father Robert Raymond Lemkin DDS) when they were in our home for 1.5 decades, I had never seen the manuscript of his autobiography. It took all these many years for someone to lovingly learn to read his handwriting; understand his revisions and put it in a logical order and complete a few parts that were only in outline. The book was a treasure for me to read. Raphael never talked about his boyhood, early adulthood, nor escape from Poland - I'm sure because it was too painful, and brought up the 49 family members lost to the Holocaust despite his pleas for others to flee with him. As persons here and elsewhere have noted, he devoted his life to one thing - using law and the power of morality to fight against the dark side of humanity - against crimes against humanity, against wars, and against the term of his coinage: genocide!
He was a lonely and poor man who always fought on against great odds and the obstacles of power and entrenched notions of international law and the interests of nations. He could have had a more normal life, but he chose the one he did because he felt he could choose no other - and we are all the richer for that; however, there is still a VERY long way to go to see his dreams ultimately realized. Long an obscure figure, except to the family and the few who knew him, his time now seems to have arrived. Many books and films have been made - others I know of are in production. Courses are taught on Genocide and some universities even have programs dedicated to its study.
Personally, he taught me how one person could make a difference in the World, and that one should first consider themselves a citizen of the World, before thinking of unimportant things like 'nationality' or 'clan', 'religion', speaker of this or that language, etc. Too many say 'what can I, one person, do?' I think my uncle Raphael answered that with the way he led his life.
I really enjoyed reading this book and it rings true to the man I knew and heard from and about so many times at my family home and from others. I was touched with the sensitivity he portrayed his innocent pre-war years, living in the Pale - as well as the descriptions of his worries, strategies, doubts and hopes to see his dream realized. It even was, partly, by the time he died. Sadly, it was not until many years after his death that the USA finally signed onto the Genocide Treaty of the United Nations (which he wrote and 'unofficially' haunted the U.N. to persuade nations to sign on to it at the U.N. and ratify it in their own homelands.
My thanks to the editor who so wonderfully made this unfinished manuscript a reality. I would suggest this book highly to anyone concerned about the issues that Raphael Lemkin devoted his life to, and for anyone who wants to know how one person can make a difference in the World....if only more of us would try.
