About the Author
Donald E. Westlake (1933–2008) was one of the most prolific and talented authors of American crime fiction. He began his career in the late 1950s, churning out novels for pulp houses—often writing as many as four novels a year under various pseudonyms—but soon began publishing under his own name. His most well-known characters were John Dortmunder, an unlucky thief, and a ruthless criminal named Parker. His writing earned him three Edgars and a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. Westlake’s cinematic prose and brisk dialogue made his novels attractive to Hollywood, and several motion pictures were made from his books, with stars such as Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson. Westlake wrote several screenplays himself, receiving an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of The Grifters, Jim Thompson’s noir classic.

This is all fine, but it is not among Westlake's best writing ...

A decent who done it novel of a very common form. This is the kind of novel where you read and can't really figure out who did it and in the end the central figure who narrates tells you who did it and why. This is all fine, but it is not among Westlake's best writing where you get twists and turns and amazingly crazy things that all seem plausible.

A good read but more similar to other authors than to Westlake's famous works.

Half the book was devoted to identifying and finding the "stowaway' when all he had to do was look through the files for the picture of the man. Pretty uninteresting.

Instead, he aims to foster a kind of learned understanding of wild places, in this case the vast, scarcely knowable northern landscape. Writing of the natural history of the Arctic and its inhabitants--narwhals, polar bears, beluga whales, musk oxen, and caribou among them--Lopez draws powerful lessons from the land and imparts them assuredly and gracefully. Having lived in the Arctic for long periods of time, Lopez authoritatively conveys an enormous breadth and variety of knowledge, including Arctic exploration, geography, weather, animal migration, and behavior. His portraits of animalsmuskox, polar bear, narwhale, and othersreflect a sensitive melding of facts and mystery. The work is suffused with philosophical and lyrical strains. Through the centuries the Arctic landscape has woven a "legacy of desire" in many a mind and heart, shaping imagination and knowledge. For Lopez, how the Arctic is comprehended will determine its fate. Whether its land, peoples, and animals are honored or vitiated will depend upon the working out of this metaphorical analogy between mind and landscape. Highly recommended for most collections. The finest 'nature book' written

I've read a lot of nature writing--from Thoreau, Muir, Dillard etc. Lopez is the keenest observer and the most lyrical writer. (not to slight Muir, incidentally, but 19th century lyricism is hard for some to get used to...).
I've been a backcountry ranger for 28 years and, I like to think, have an appreciation for wilderness and observation of the natural world. Lopez is able to describe what I see.

Desert Island book

Funny that a book about the Arctic would be on my "Desert Island" list, but this is one of the most effecting things I've read in my life. It's one thing to write a book about a region that explains it to the reader. It's quite another thing to write a book about a region that truly makes you feel as if you are there, that you understand it, that you "get it". The Eskimos have something like 25 words for snow. They can draw incredibly detailed maps of coastlines, from memory. On and on, the people and places are introduced to you, like visitors to your home, and you really begin to understand what it is to live in such a cold, beautiful place. The story of one Eskimo hunter will never leave me: he was hunting, and somehow became stranded on a broken off piece of ice. It floated away, with him on it, into the mist. All he had was his knife, made of bone. His friends searched for him, to no avail, and he was given up for dead. But he came back, years later, in a kayak he'd made, fully outfitted with warm clothes he'd also made, fat and happy and completely in tune with his environment, absolutely as at home there as the polar bear. He could make everything he needed, just from what this supposedly "barren" wasteland provided. That may not sound like much, but put yourself in his shoes (or mukluks) and you'll begin to feel the cold and the quiet close in around you.
That's what this book does for you. It puts you there.

A Celebration Of The Arctic Landscape & Man's Dreams!

"Arctic Dreams" was recommended to me by a friend before I went on an Alaskan adventure a few years ago. This book expanded my vision of nature, and turned me on to the exquisite writing of Barry Lopez, who won the 1986 National Book Award for this classic work on the wild regions of the far north. "Arctic Dreams" is an extraordinary celebration of Arctic life and landscape which takes the reader on a journey to places rarely visited by man. Lopez' narrative does have a dreamlike quality, not only in its descriptions of nature at its most surreal, but in the absolute beauty of the writing itself. He does indeed capture the foreign reality of Arctic life, and death, with the loving care of an artist who places each brushstroke carefully on a canvas, bent on bringing the vision before him to others.
Mr. Lopez made a number of extended trips to Siberia, Greenland, and northern Canada, including Baffin Island, to observe the flora and fauna of the region - polar bears, killer whales, caribou, narwhals - as well as the spectacular Arctic landscape. He experienced eerie encounters with the aurora borealis, massive migrating icebergs, solar and lunar light, halos and coronas. And he experienced both the potential for catastrophic danger and the remarkable beauty that the Arctic land and sea offers. "Spring storms can sweep hundreds of thousands of helpless infant harp seals into the sea" - juxtaposed with, "A tiny flower blooms in a field of snow touched by the sun's benevolent light." Through Mr. Lopez' eyes the breathtaking experience of the Arctic landscape and the people who inhabit it become palpably real. I was particularly moved by his intimate and compassionate descriptions of the indigenous people of this region, who so aptly illustrate how mankind is capable of living in harmony with his surroundings. Lopez' prose and his conclusions make the strongest argument possible to work for the ecological health of our planet, for the sake of life itself, and for the health of our imagination and sense of wonder at the magnificent.
As mankind grows closer to conquering the earth's last frontiers, the issue of exploitation and encroachment becomes greater. For anyone who advocates preserving the few remaining wild areas on our planet, "Arctic Dreams" is a welcome gift and a source of motivation. It also provides an extraordinary read, and, perhaps, an awakening to those who have shown little interest in earth's most mysterious places.
This is a magical book that will enchant and awe the reader. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Bravo, Barry Lopez!

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Pädagogik - Heilpädagogik, Sonderpädagogik, Note: 1,3, Universität Koblenz-Landau (Institut für Sonderpädagogik), 8 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Das fragile-X-Syndrom gilt als die zweithäufigste ererbte Ursache einer geistigen Behinderung nach dem Down-Syndrom“ (s. Sarimski 1997, S.113). Diese Aussage hat mich sehr überrascht, da ich vom fragilen-X-Syndrom zuvor noch nichts gehört hatte. Auch in der Bibliothek war im Vergleich zum Down-Syndrom nur wenig zu finden. Daraus kann man schließen, dass das fragile-X-Syndrom trotz hoher Prävalenz vielen Menschen weitgehend unbekannt ist. Ich wählte dieses Syndrom für mein Referat schließlich auch, weil ich mich mit einem mir unbekannten Syndrom beschäftigen wollte.
Über die Häufigkeit des Syndroms nennt die Literatur sehr unterschiedliche Zahlen oder will sich auch nicht festlegen. Die Zahlen gehen von 1:5000 bis 1:1000. „Im Schnitt beträgt die Häufigkeit 1:1200 bei Männern und 1:2500 bei Frauen“(siehe Wikipedia: fragiles-X-Syndrom).
Man geht davon aus, dass die Zahlen noch viel höher sind, da durch den geringen Bekanntheitsgrad der Krankheit viele Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung vermutlich nur nicht mit diesem Syndrom diagnostiziert wurden. „Bei Screening-Untersuchungen in Einrichtungen für Behinderte fand sich zum Beispiel bei 8% der Betroffenen, deren Diagnose bis dahin ungeklärt war ein fragiles-X-Syndrom“ (siehe Sarimski 1997, S. 114).
In dieser Arbeit möchte ich im ersten Teil kurz auf die Geschichte eingehen und klinischen Aspekte dieses Syndroms erläutern.
Im zweiten Teil werde ich mich mit der genetischen Ursache beschäftigen. Dazu habe ich mir vor allem folgende Fragen gestellt:
Warum hat das X-Chromosom eine brüchige Stelle? Wieso bewirkt eine brüchige Stelle im Chromosom eine Behinderung? Warum sind Männer öfter von diesem Syndrom betroffen als Frauen?
Ein weiteres wichtiges Thema ist meiner Meinung nach die Frage nach der Vererbung. Ist dieses fragile-X-Syndrom vererbbar? Wenn ja, wer ist der Überträger? Gerade in der heutigen Zeit, in der die Pränataldiagnostik immer mehr von schwangeren Frauen zur Vorsorge gefordert wird, da die Gesellschaft „gesunde Kinder“ will, sind diese Fragen sehr aktuell. Darauf aufbauend ist es auch wichtig auf die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten der Kinder zu achten. Denn auch diese wären z. B. in einem Gespräch mit einer schwangeren Frau zu erwähnen. Den Schwerpunkt werde ich auf das Thema kognitive Entwicklung legen indem ich die Stärken und Schwächen aufzählen und sich die daraus ergebenen Lehrmethoden erläutern werde. Am Schluss gehe ich noch kurz auf die restlichen psychologischen Aspekte ein.

Great book for forming a Family LLC and constructing an operating agreement. It encompasses many different strategies and tactics and realistically addresses the pieces and decisions that need to be to put together and made for a good and solid agreement, that will hopefully stand the test of time.. A better index would be nice. I bought half a dozen copies for me and my siblings and am using it as a guide. Some of it is quite humorous because it's true. A comprehensive fully searchable pdf would also be nice.

This paperback book was recommended by a highly respected lawyer in my state. The family summer house has been used and owned for 50 years and the ownership is devolving on to the third generation. How to create a plan to keep this beloved house in the family? This is not so easy to do with all the complexities of a big complicated family? This is the right book to study if this transition is going on in your family. You do not have to be a lawyer to understand this readable book. It could change your family life for generations to come

In 2001 Lynn Margulis visited the main campus of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito to give the commencement address and to travel to the Tiputini Biodiversity Station in the Ecuadorian Amazonia. We felt privileged to be part of her entourage for this trip to the rainforest and to have the opportunity to listen her descriptions of hundreds of plants, fungi, insects, slime molds, and even symbiotic protists inhabiting the guts of primitive termites. During this trip Lynn expressed the need to promote a more comprehensive perspective on biological evolution, one that takes in account not only the classical and modern interpretations of Darwin’s ideas but also the mechanisms of microbial evolution, especially symbiogenesis -the process that gave rise to eucaryotes more than two billion years ago and has continued to shape protists and multicellular organisms ever since. It was clear that evolutionary science was concentrated primarily on macroscopic biota while neglecting microbes almost entirely.

Those conversations became the main motivation to bring some of the most important minds working in evolutionary science to the very place that inspired Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands. During the summers of 2005 and 2009 we gathered scientists specializing on plants, animals, bacteria and, protists to discuss the peculiarities of evolutionary mechanisms within each domain of life. This book contains some of the most important lectures presented at the first two World Summits on Evolution.

About the Author
Ian R. MacLeod is the acclaimed writer of challenging and innovative speculative and fantastic fiction. His most recent novel, Wake Up and Dream, won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History, while his previous works have won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, and the World Fantasy Award, and have been translated into many languages. His short story “Snodgrass” was developed for television in the United Kingdom as part of the Sky Arts series Playhouse Presents. MacLeod grew up in the West Midlands region of England, studied law, and spent time working and dreaming in the civil service before moving on to teaching and house-husbandry. He lives with his wife in the riverside town of Bewdley.

For Alt-History Film Buffs and MacLeod Fans

Well written alternate history mystery but the ending did not come together for me. Worth a read if you are: a) an alt-history fan; b) a MacLeod completist; c) want a nicely researched "what if" of a Hollywoodland that never was. Some characters -- particularly Bogart and Hughes -- stand out despite their bit parts. But to me it was really LA that's the star of this story. And ultimately that was just not enough to carry the book to my satisfaction. MacLeod's earlier works are a better introduction to this author. Save this one for a rainy day after a night of B&W classic films.
