About the Author
Andy Diggle's "The Losers" was adapted into a major Warner Brothers movie in 2010. He was formerly the editor of 2000 AD. As a writer he channelled extraordinary vision and enthusiasm into the creation of "Lenny Zero" and "Snow/Tiger," both immediate fan-favourites. His first work for a US publisher was with the Sandman/Hellblazer spin-off series "Lady Constantine," after which he co-created "The Losers" to great critical success with his former "Lenny Zero" collaborator Jock, and was subsequently named as one of Entertainment Weekly magazine's "Breakout Stars of 2003." He has since written "Swamp Thing";"Adam Strange";"Silent Dragon" and the launch arc of "Batman Confidential."

Jock is one of 2000 AD's finest young creators. As well as illustrating "Judge Dredd";"Pulp Sci-Fi";"Tharg the Mighty" and "Tor Cyan," Jock co-created "Lenny Zero" and "The Losers" with Andy Diggle, and is the concept artist of the re-booted 2011 "Judge Dredd" movie.

Diggle and Jock Rock GA's Year One Origin!

Green Arrow, as cheesy as he was sometimes portrayed with all the trick arrows (Net Arrow, Boxing Glove Arrow, Boomerang Arrow), was always one of my favorite heroes when I was growing up. When I got tired of wanting to grow up to be Batman, I'd want to be Green Arrow. Especially when he got changed from playboy to radical leftist and bleeding heart. That bearded free spirit with the attitude of sticking it to the man was just what I needed to grow up on in the 1970s. Oliver Queen taught me to think outside the box and question life and a number of other things.

He still remains as DC Comics' most radical hero. Mike Grell created THE LONGBOW HUNTERS and pushed away the trick arrows for a time, getting Ollie back to his roots as a cutting-edge back street brawler, then enjoyed a long run on the strip. Chuck Dixon shortly followed Grell and even killed Ollie off long enough to give us a new Green Arrow in Connor Hawke.

Even though he'd died and gone to Heaven, Ollie come back in issues penned by Kevin (DAREDEVIL, CLERKS) Smith. Lately Judd Winnick has married him off to Black Canary and invented a whole new Speedy for this generation.

But Andy Diggle (THE LOSERS) got the green light to pen the adventures of Oliver Queen's Year One origin while so many longtime DC Comics heroes are getting spotlight treatment. I really enjoyed Diggle's run on THE LOSERS as well as some of his other forays, but I didn't know if he was the right guy for Green Arrow. As it turns out, Diggle was just the guy to bring Ollie once more to the masses.

Diggle's scriptwork is excellent. He moves the story along and finesses the characters and relationship through dialogue and action, and the overall effect is like watching a movie with first-person voiceovers. An added bonus in the graphic novel contains the first few pages of the actual script Diggle turned in to the editor and artist. He didn't just put the words on the page, he actually planned on where the action would go and how it would be revealed.

In the beginning, Oliver Queen was a playboy with more money than he knew what to do with. He rambled and tried extreme sports to fill the gaps in his life, constantly trying to find his happy. Diggle does a masterful job of portraying that, and even ties in the ROBIN HOOD touchstones of Errol Flynn and Howard Hill's longbow at a fundraiser where Ollie really makes an idiot of himself.

Jock's artwork is fantastic. The panels and spreads flow cinematically across the pages. Movement comes alive, tension is as tight as a bowstring, and the sweeping majesty of nature fills the senses so much I could almost smell the grass and the gunpowder. The fact that Diggle and Jock have worked together before shows. They're a well-oiled machine attuned to turned out powerful stories.

The plot of GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE is absurdly simple, but it shows off so much of what has become canon for the character. Oliver's disenchantment of his own prosperity, the dislike of the image of so many of the rich and celebrity, the false platitudes so many hucksters and politicians spout, and his search for real meanings takes shape in these pages.

His inherent survivalist's nature shines through in the wilderness and the human adversity he faces. Diggle also touches on Ollie's abhorrence of drugs (which became a major plot point in the 1970s when it was revealed that Roy Harper, Green Arrow's original sidekick Speedy who has now gone on to become Red Arrow, had a drug problem). Understanding that Ollie got addicted to opium while healing on the island actually shores up Ollie's overreaction and disappointment in Roy at that time. There's even a comment made after a drastic injury regarding the potential of Ollie losing his arm that plays off the way Ollie was killed - for a time.

There's a lot to love about this graphic novel if you're a Green Arrow fan. I had a blast reading it, then re-reading it. And it's a great introduction to the character if you've never read anything about him. Despite the fact that his series seems to constantly respawn, there's a resiliency of Oliver Queen that just won't go away forever. He's become an icon in the DC Comics universe, and Diggle and Jock reveal here in these pages.

I bought this book for a coworker who introduced me to the show Arrow, I've since introduced him to the world of comics, he started reading this book, grew a beard and disappeared.

Some Inspiration for the CW's ARROW. Excellent retake on Ollie's origin

I've been a huge fan of Oliver Queen since I stumbled across the Longbow Hunters mini series in the early 90s. Mike Grell and Denny O'Neill shaped my opinion of who Oliver Queen should be.

While I like Kevin Smith's Quiver, the Judd Winnick years were atrocious. So I was pleasantly surprised (okay knocked off my butt) by Diggle and Jock's excellent tweak of Ollie's origin. I love the early Island scenes as Queen loses all of his rich boy ideology to the simple principles of survival. The villains are truly awful, and as Mel Odom said in his review, the tweak on Oliver's hatred of heroin is very well done. Art wise, Jock delivers a bare, yet very detailed story. His art is almost storyboard-like and works quite well.

As I am looking forward to the CW's Arrow, I was happily surprised to see the costume, primal vibe and cinematography of the island in the available previews seem to instantly echo Jock's art. So I hope to see more of Year One incorporated into the coming series. And not just in character names (Ollie's chauffeur is named John Diggle.) If Arrow borrows more than these, it will be a great live action tribute to my favorite DC hero

I am rather disppointed in the nu52 Ollie and do not understand why DC did not run with the young Oliver Queen from the Year One series. This is a very smart, exciting and cinematic read.

Inspirational, motivational play reviewed by teen.

Emlyn William's play,"The Corn Is Green", set in the a Welsh mining town at the turn of the century, expresses the joys of teaching and learning in their purest form. Miss Moffet's instruction and inspiration provides the young, ignorant miner Morgan with the tools to satisfy his insatiable thirst and passion for knowledge. Morgan's resistance and foolish decisions along the way serve to test his determination, values, and belief in himself. Parallels may be drawn with films such as "Dead Poets Society" and "The Man Without A Face", as each inspirational teacher provides a boy with knowledge, confidence, and most importantly humanity. Also, the film version of "The Corn Is Green" with Katharine Hepburn is well acted and shot on location in Wales. For further reference regarding the film, Kate Hepburn discusses her personal reaction to the play in her book ME. Every individual who loves to learn and teach will savor the deliciously inspirational words of Ms. Williams. Although fairly abscure at present, this play would make exceptional reading material for high schools--promoting a positive approach to learning for the millenium.

Thy Corn is Green: A Comedy in Three Acts

The Corn is Green is a simple play set in a Welsh mining town. It follows the struggles of Morgan Evans - a young man who has lost all his family and spends his days in the mines. Luckily, Ms.Moffat, a well educated woman, moves to town with the goal to educate the boys of the mining community. She shows a particular interest in Morgan Evans. Through his education, Morgan begins to show great talent in writing and eventually becomes the star student. However, he struggles with a sudden identity change and looks to Bessie Watty, a resentful and rebellious girl, for comfort. Morgan struggles continue to escalate as time goes by.
The play focuses on working class hardships, but does not truly illustrate the lives of the impoverished. Because it only focuses on Morgan Evans, it makes success seem easy when in actuality, it was almost impossible for someone to overcome the circumstances in which he was born.
The Corn is Green does address the issues of the time period, but hardly scratches the surface. Though it touches interesting issues, it does so in a standard way and does not evoke strong emotion.

The Corn is Green

This is a play set in a small town in a Welsh Village in the nineteenth century. The two main characters are Mrs. Moffat who decides to start a school in this city of coal miners, and Morgan Evans who is a brilliant student. With her two fellow teachers, they begin a school in their living room. In a town where every child over the age of 12 is required to work in the mines, Mrs. Moffat wants to change all of that and make sure every child there knows how to read, write, and has options for their future.
The key themes presented in this play are gender roles, equality of education, and the need to fulfill ones goals.
In the beginning of the play, it was hard to read. There was not really much interesting information in Act 1. In Act 2, things started to get interesting and then it was really easy to read and was enjoyable! If you like reading plays set in older times, you will probably enjoy this one!

Knöpfe haben verschiedene Verwendungszwecke. Sie können textile Gegenstände verschließen und damit den Inhalt unsichtbar machen, den textilen Gegenstand am Träger anlegen, um ein Herunterrutschen zu verhindern und Textilien verzieren.
Weil Schülerinnen und Schüler im Alltag ständig Knöpfen begegnen, erscheint es wichtig, dass ihnen auch ihre oben aufgezählten Funktionen bewusst werden. Gerade etwas Einfaches wie ein Knopf kann sehr spannend sein. Von ihrer Entwicklungsgeschichte bis zu ihrer Artenvielfalt sind mehrere Faktoren vorhanden, das Thema Knöpfe auch für Schülerinnen und Schüler interessant zu machen.
Ziel des Textilunterrichts ist es, Schülerinnen und Schüler zu befähigen, „bewusst, kompetent und kreativ mit Textilien in all ihren Erscheinungsformen umzugehen“ (Richtlinien NRW 1993, S. 35). Dazu gehört auch, dass sie in der Lage sind, Textilien zu reparieren und zu verändern. Bevor es möglich ist, in anspruchsvolle textile Techniken einzusteigen, bedarf es der Schulung der Grundkenntnisse, und dazu gehört das Annähen von Knöpfen. Gerade Schülerinnen und Schüler der fünften Klasse haben Schwierigkeiten im Umgang mit Nadel und Faden. Schon das Einfädeln fällt ihnen schwer. Deshalb habe ich mich entschieden, es zu üben, um späteren Misserfolgen entgegenzuwirken.

Ihre Einzigartigkeit beruht auf der im höchsten Maße sorgfältigen Wort-für-Wort Übersetzung des massoretischen Textes, die sich darum bemüht „la verdad hebrayca“ so authentisch wie möglich in der spanischen Sprache zu erhalten. Das Ergebnis ist eine Sprache, die zwischen dem hebräischen Original und der Zielsprache liegt. Sie übernimmt größtenteils die Syntax und die Grammatik ersterer, füllt sie aber mit spanischer Lexik. Ziel dieser Calque-Übersetzung war es, den ehemals zwangsgetauften und später im Exil rekonvertierten Juden, die des Hebräischen nicht mehr oder kaum mächtig waren, die Auseinandersetzung mit dem biblischen Text zu ermöglichen und durch die enge Verbindung mit der Vorlage den Wiedererkennungseffekt zu fördern. Trotz ihrer Funktionalität hatte diese Übersetzungsmethode nicht nur Anhänger – wie die obigen Zitate verdeutlichen – da sie die Grammatikregeln und Stilvorgaben der Zielsprache in vielen Fällen außer Acht lässt.
Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Besonderheiten der Calque-Übersetzung auf der Grundlage der Bücher Haggai und Deuteronomium der Biblia de Ferrara und erörtert die Problematik der Methode anhand der kontroversen Rezeption des gesamten Werkes. Zunächst soll jedoch geklärt werden, wie verlässlich und vor allem angemessen und glaubwürdig Bibeltexte, bzw. ihre Übersetzungen für linguistische Untersuchungen sind. Um die Bedeutung der Ferrara-Bibel für die sephardische Diaspora zu verdeutlichen, folgt ein kurzer historischer Einblick in die Umstände ihrer Entstehung, der durch einen Exkurs in die Geschichte der Bibelübersetzung aus dem massoretischen Text in das Spanische bis 1553 abgeschlossen wird. Daraufhin soll die Calque-Methode zunächst in Theorie und Praxis vorgestellt werden, bevor ihre Vor-und Nachteile für die zeitgenössischen und späteren Leser am Beispiel der Biblia de Ferrara erörtert werden.

But Isherwood's singular perceptions of the older generation holding on and the younger trying to wrench free are as valid today as they were half a century ago.

About the Author
Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986), perhaps the first major openly gay writer to be read extensively by a wider audience, was one of the most distinguished authors of the twentieth century. His literary friendships encompassed such writers as W. H. Auden, E. M. Forster, Stephen Spender, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, and Somerset Maugham.

Early Isherwood

This is what is known as a completionist novel: one reads it to have completed reading all of Isherwood's fiction. Isherwood was a very good novelist with two masterpieces on his plate: The Berlin Stories and A Single Man. The rest are never less than competent and always have his wry wit and intelligence(his memoir Christopher and His Kind is fascinating).

This early work (his first novel) reads like many 20's novels with highly theatrical, self-involved characters interacting in scenes that would work better on stage than between the covers of a book. That none of them are particularly sympathetic may be off putting for some. Even Isherwood, in his self-deprecating introduction to this edition, is half-apologetic about the experimental styles used intermittently and unsuccessfully.

The plot involves the son of the house, Phillip, who wishes to escape the office where he works, torn between pleasing his oppressive mother and the dreams of becoming an artist (writer AND painter, mind you). His ally is his sister, Joan, who likewise is torn between two suitors, a cynical med student and a stuffed shirt Cambridge man. The climax is out of a 30's film and totally absurd.

And yet there are the seeds of the novelist Isherwood would become, the precocity of this early writer (he started the novel when he was 21) on display in a few wonderfully written scenes and the satisfaction of seeing where his talent began.
