So unterschiedlich die Meinungen über den „Tango“ damals auch waren. Eines hatten alle Cineasten, die den Film gesehen hatten, gemein: „Der letzte Tango“ hatte sie alle in irgendeiner Art und Weise bewegt.
Die im folgenden vorgestellten Perspektiven auf den letzten Tango in Paris wollen den Mythos um den letzten Tango von Paris nicht aufheben oder entschlüsseln, sondern erklären, wie und warum es zu dem Mythos um den letzten Tango gekommen ist.
Es kristallisieren sich zwei Analyseebenen des Films heraus, an denen in der Arbeit angeknüpft werden soll.
Die erste ist die Ebene der Wirkung in der Öffentlichkeit. Daher ist es wichtig, vor der eigentlichen Wirkungsanalyse des letzten Tangos, dessen Inhalt und den dazugehörigen (zeitlichen und örtlichen) Kontext kurz zu umschreiben. Darin soll auch geklärt werden, warum es gerade der Tango sein muss, der nur in Paris getanzt werden kann.
Die zweite Ebene der Hausarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Intentionen und Botschaften des Films. Somit dreht sich dieser Teil der Arbeit, der zugleich ihr eigentliches „Herzstück“ darstellt, um die Macher des Films.
Zunächst natürlich um den Regisseur, den Italiener Bernardo Bertolucci. Dann geht es in der Arbeit auch um den „Star des Films“, den männlichen Hauptdarsteller Marlon Brando. Die dritte im Bunde ist die damals erst 19-jährige Maria Schneider. Ihr persönlich kommt der inhaltlich geringste Teil der Analyse dieser Arbeit zugute. Vielmehr wird versucht, über die Persönlichkeit Maria Schneiders hinaus, ihre Funktion im Film, insbesondere als Frau im erotischen Film der damaligen Zeit zu untersuchen.
Diese drei Charakterstudien über die „Macher“ des letzten Tangos werden vor allem im Hinblick auf die Zentralfrage der Arbeit angefertigt. Kann man den Film als ein intimes Interview zu dritt bezeichnen? Schöpft der Film gerade daraus seine „ästhetische Schockwirkung“, dass er viele autobiographische Züge seiner Schöpfer enthält?
Die Arbeit will herausstellen, in wie weit dieser Film auch ein tiefenpsychologisches Projekt ist und zeigt zugleich Grenzen und Probleme dieser Arbeitsmethode auf. Dabei werden auch zahlreiche Selbsteinschätzungen der drei Personen und Aussagen übereinander verwendet.
Den Abschluss der Arbeit bildet eine differenzierte und kritische Betrachtung des Autors auf Wirkung und Intention des Mythos „Der letzte Tango in Paris“.
