Die leicht verständliche, humorvolle Erzählart macht das Buch zunächst jedem interessierten Leser zugänglich - 400 Seiten voller charmanter Abenteuer, kleiner Diebereien und größerer Hochstapeleien des Helden Felix Krull. Doch hinter dem Schein des Amüsements und dem Hochstaplermotiv bietet uns Thomas Mann mit Hilfe seines Protagonisten Krull eine nicht zu unterschätzende sozialkritische oder gar gesellschaftspolitische Dimension.
Doch welchen Anstoß hatte Thomas Mann, einen Roman zu schreiben, der ihn sein ganzes Leben hindurch beschäftigen sollte? Inspiration und Handlungsgerüst bei der Entstehung seines Schelmenromans waren unter anderem die 1905 veröffentlichten Memoiren des rumänischen Hoteldiebes und Hochstaplers Georges Manolescu, die einen sensationellen Erfolg feierten.
Die vorliegende Arbeit will zunächst auf die besondere Entstehungsgeschichte des Romans eingehen. Danach wird der Einfluss der Manolescu-Memoiren auf Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull untersucht. Nachweisbar wurden in der ersten Arbeitsphase verschiedene Motive und Eigenschaften des Protagonisten Manolescu auf den Protagonisten Krull übertragen. Vor allem die Fortsetzung der Manolescu-Memoiren, der zweite Band "Gescheitert. Aus dem Seelenleben eines Verbrechers", bildete eine wahre Fundgrube für Thomas Mann. Die Künstlerthematik beider Romane führt schließlich zu einer tiefgründigen Gesellschaftskritik. Das vierte Kapitel beschäftigt sich zunächst mit den Reisestationen. Es soll anhand der Weltausstellungen in Paris und Chicago geklärt werden, wie es vor allem Manolescu möglich war, diese sensationellen Diebstähle in Millionenhöhe zu begehen. Das letzte Kapitel geht schließlich auf die literarische Gattung des Schelmenromans ein. Hierbei werden die Bekenntnisse natürlich vorrangig betrachtet, doch finden sich auch bei dem Hochstapler Manolescu schelmische Züge. Neben der Beschreibung des schelmischen Helden und seines Verhältnisses zu seiner Zeit soll auch die Form und Sprache untersucht werden, denn trägt der Roman nicht nur Züge der Manolescu-Memoiren, sondern man findet bei näherer Betrachtung auch etliche autobiographische Parallelen zum Leben Thomas Manns. Dieses Kapitel ist auch gleichzeitig eine Zusammenfassung der bisher gewonnen Erkenntnisse.
