Excellent resource on the Healthcare case. Essential reading!

This collection of essays is well worth reading, especially while everyone is debating the validity, effectiveness, and constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act. Each piece is written in a clear and professional style. In terms of expressed political or legal bias, this book weighs all sides of the arguments, presenting factual, well-sourced information for the reader to contemplate and evaluate. All of articles are extremely informative and insightful.

About the Author
Samuel Wells (PhD, University of Durham) is vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Anglican Church at Trafalgar Square in London, England. He previously served as dean of the chapel and taught at Duke University. Wells is the author of several books, including Improvisation: The Drama of Christian Ethics, Be Not Afraid, and Transforming Fate into Destiny: The Theological Ethics of Stanley Hauerwas. George Sumner (PhD, Yale University) is principal and Helliwell Professor of World Mission at Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, in Toronto, Ontario. He has served in various pastoral roles and is an honorary assistant at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Toronto.

Uneven but worth consideration

A volume in the Brazos Theological Commentary series placing two books that feature Jews adjusting to the situation of exile: Esther and Daniel.

The Brazos Theological Commentary series is a welcome concept: a commentary series focused less on the questions which scholarship generally finds most pressing (who wrote what, when, where, why) and more on making sense of the role of the texts in theology with a view to the history of interpretation of the text, especially within the Christian tradition.

The quality of this particular volume in the commentary was a bit uneven between the two authors, especially as to how they approached the endeavor. Part of the challenge involves the distinctiveness of the two books: sure, they are both set in the exile, but otherwise have very little else in common.

Esther: the author of the Esther commentary is in conversation with a lot of recent studies in Esther and uses them in many ways that can help understand the text.. The author sees the main story of Esther mostly in contrast with much of the rest of the presentation of God and Israel in its history: using realpolitik to eke out existence, deftly manipulating situations, confident in God's providence but not in direct acts as before, and sees the whole story as a grotesque exaggeration of exilic challenges and realities. Many of the thoughts are suggestive and prompt thinking but do not necessarily show a way forward of seeing how the book of Esther fits within the canon and the greater Judeo-Christian tradition and understanding.

Daniel: the author of the Daniel commentary does extremely well at setting aside all of the questions about authorship and setting and does a great job of understanding Daniel in its supposed context, as used in Judaism and early Christianity, and the history of interpretation, mostly Christian but Jewish as well, of the text and its applications. The author considers Daniel 7 as the means by which to understand the rest of the work and does well at expressing the power of God over and despite the nations and their activities. One idiosyncrasy of the work is the author's continual attempt at associating Daniel and its themes with missiology and a missiological focus, which no doubt can be found at some level but leaves one wondering whether it is the best lens through which to read Daniel.

Nevertheless, a fruitful resource through which to become more aware of the interpretations of Esther and Daniel and means by which to understand these texts in our own day.

An Entertaining Paranormal Read!

I love Jus Accardo's work; I'm a big fan of her Denazen series, her snarky characters and her writing. I will be honest in saying that her two main characters, Jessie and Lukas reminded me a lot of Dez and Kale; it worried me some but I will say that even though there are similarities they are nothing alike. In fact, as big of a fan of Dez's I am, I love Jessie even more. She is feisty, brave, kick-ass and has a personality that keeps you smiling and laughing.

As a paranormal fan, this book was like heaven. It had a little bit of basically everything. Demons, ghosts, necromancers, witches, weres (though they were scarcely mentioned) and who knows what else this world has in store for us! This book focus' on The Seven Deadly Sins and it's addicting. The sins are locked up in a box and released upon this town to begin raising havoc where they go. One difference is the Lukas, who houses Wrath but he's not like the others. Wrath and he are entwined, permanently. Somehow he's able to keep Wrath at bay . . . most of the time. The sin that causes the most trouble for everyone is Lust, which shouldn't come as a surprise.

There's actually a scene in this book that Lust causes that is just hard to read for some, I assume. It's hard for our main character, Jessie, to get past even when the victim of it all never intended it. I wish I could warn you of this scene without giving it away but I can't. Just know, if you come to a scene where she runs in to the woods, be prepared.

I finished this book almost a week ago and I've just been having the hardest time writing this review; not because it's bad (because, clearly, it's not) but because I can't find the proper words to put all my feels in to. This book is different, fun, filled to the brim with action and adventure not to mention a good dose of romance. Who doesn't love romance in books? Certainly not this lady right here! Did I mention just how much I love Jessie?! She's been added to my 'totally kick-ass girl crush list' which is extremely short.

There is not a dull moment in this book; it leaves you salivating for more. If you are already a fan of Jus Accardo than kudos to you, you have amazing taste! If you are asking yourself why don't I know of this author - fear not, I am here to direct you! Check out this book or check out her other series - regardless, you'll most likely end up a fan of them all! I'm going out on a limb here and stating that she is probably my favorite Entangled author...

An Extreme Disappointment

I enjoyed Accardo's first book, TOUCH, so I was eager to dive into this one when I received it for review. But, in all honesty, this book was more of a struggle than anything else. It took me nearly a month to read it in sporadic bits because I hated the characterization that ruined a potentially amazing plot. The execution of nearly everything, especially the romance, had me cringing. And when I finally made it ⅘ of the way through, I had to skim the ending because I just didn't have any desire to truly find out what was happening. I made it through this one out of sheer will.

I think that my disappointment in this book was, in large part, due to my inability to connect with Jessie Darker-our main character. She has a very unique sense of humor that was more annoying than anything else. She often curses, but instead of using any real curses she has to exclaim "craps!" at the most inopportune times. Her thoughts are full of pop culture references that will quickly fall out of date and, on top of that, I found most things she said that are meant to be hilarious rather childish. An example of such a thing was her reaction to meeting Lukas when she said, "Holy house of hogs getting blasted by the blue birdie brigade." That's her way of saying he's something nice to look at. And we're reminded several different times throughout the book that the love interest is sheer perfection physically, vocally, and emotionally. One such instance is the exclamation that his voice has the ability to make an Eskimo melt. I'm sorry, but the perfection was so unreal to me and made Lukas fall just as flat as Jessie because I couldn't really believe anything about him.

The romance angered me as well because this is a serious case of insta-love. When there's only a week to save the world from the Sins, any romance would obviously move fast. But the first kiss was a mere sixty-two pages into my eARC. Lukas was in pain, battling the sin that inhabits him while he was curled up on the ground and Jessie's brilliant plan to save him was to, completely out of nowhere, smash their faces together. And then a mere four or so days later she realized she was falling for him. But of course there's another guy thrown in there who is affected by Lust so he is evil and out of control for a bit. He even goes as far as to throw in an attempt at rape in there, which just made my already deflated mood in regards to this book turn outright sour. And the declarations of love kept coming.

While the premise was promising, the terrible characterization, bad pacing, and intolerable romance made me really dislike this book. I was so excited for it, but I just couldn't handle anything. I found myself repeatedly getting frustrated and had nearly no desire to read the book. Finishing it was like a miracle. And while I know many people have enjoyed it, this one was simply not for me. I will not be continuing this series.

This book will be for those with a unique sense of humor that do not mind insta-love. I think it will be more appreciated by a younger audience as well.

We All Make Mistakes In Books Reviews

Darker Days is a great series starter, full of twist, romance and snaky comments.

I'm not sure where to begin with this one, Darker Days had me laughing, swooning and crying since page one.

In a very true Jus Accardo Fashion, Darker Days starts right into the action. And I love it. The character's voice is defined from the go as well, spunky, rebellious, sarcastic and strong. And, you guessed! I love it too! Plus Jessie has some really funny ways of expressing herself...

My first reaction to this was "This sounds like Veronika Mars meets the supernatural." And if you haven't watched Veronika Mars, I'm gonna ask nicely you go to see it before another kitten dies...

Jessie Darker works with her mom as a private detective but the agency specializes in the supernatural. Zombies? Ghosts? Witches? They are your girls!
This new job they have? Is a bit tricky though... The 7 Deadly Sins were released in the city and now Jess and her mom Klair only have 5 days to find out who opened the box and get all the sins back in it before the box calls them back and with them the bodies of the 7 persons they took... Or you know, before the Sins find a way to free themselves forever...

This book is a great series starter. The fact that she made it about the 7 Deadly Sins wins Jus major cookie points. This is actually the first book I read about them.

The romance is heavy and sweet. While it may seem like Lukas and Jessie's feelings come too fast, and as much as Jessie probably will hate this: They belong together. It was Fate! Besides, Lukas is completely swoon *drool* worthy!

"Dark, shaggy hair that might've been in desperate need of a trim--if it didn't work so damn well for him. Piercing, liquid brown eyes that radiated trouble--and I loved trouble.
He wore a leather jacket over a tight black T-shirt and worn jeans that were just a bit too baggy. Oh yeah. Bad-boy-vibe was off the charts." - Darker Days by Jus Accardo

And I love me some Trouble and Bad Boys! Don't let his bad boy looks fool you though, he's one of the sweetest guy you'll ever meet. I loved him right away and right now, he's pretty high on the book boyfriend list.

The secondary characters are great additions as well, her mom and dad provided as much fun and "aww" moments as Jessie and Lukas.
Her best friend is a witch and a big promise, I can't wait to see more Kendra and all she can do.
The bad guys are so good at what they do, they deserved cookie points too.

But let's talk about what's really important here... the Plot.
The Plot is awesome! It has so many twists and things you don't see coming that will keep you on edge all the time. There were a million ways this book could have gone wrong (as in a not so happy ending, I don't believe Jus can write a bad book). I was afraid I was going to end rocking myself in a corner somewhere waiting for book two.
Jus can definitively keep the suspense and set a perfect pace to the story so that you're surprised and never bored without giving you all at once or making it predictable. And manages to balance it in a way so it's not all about the world's fate rest upon my shoulders and allows you to catch your breath between one snarky remark and the other.

I really can't wait to see what else is in store for Jessie now and what other troubles she can find in her way. The Darker Agency is sure to be another great series by Jus Accardo and you should get your copy as soon as this is out in stores!

Reick graduated with an engineering degree from Syracuse
University in 1952. His first career was working with General
Electric on cathode ray tube technology for color televisions.
Later he worked with ITT Corporation on the 465L Strategic
Command and Control System . Disillusioned with the rampant
bureaucracy, he left the corporate world to become an entrepreneur
and focus on his true passion—inventing.
His first successful product, Formula-8, was a thread
sealant that could be used in gaseous and liquid oxygen applications,
and led to the formation of his company, Fluoramics.
Fluoramics’ flagship product, Tufoil, the result of eight years
of research, was recognized in 1996 as the world’s “most efficient
lubricant” by the Guinness Book of World Records—a title
it still holds today. In 1998 he was a finalist for Inc Magazine’s
Entrepreneur of the Year Award; he is also a member of the
New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame.

First Meeting

My first meeting with Frank Reick was a jaw-dropping experience.

I was introduced to Frank by our patent attorney, Mike Ebert. (He's in Frank's book)

The usual pleasantries were short. Frank was itching to show me something. He asked me to start the engine in my car and raise the hood. He connected a tachometer that showed the engine idling at the normal 700 rpm. He then poured about 8 ounces of some liquid concoction into the oil filler. Over the next minute, the rpm gradually increased to 900 rpm! This was obviously a significant reduction in friction. This concoction was one of Frank's many invention successes, TufOil.

Reading Frank's book, you will begin to understand what it takes to become a successful inventor. Someone said, "Almost everyone has that "Once In a Lifetime Great Idea", real inventors do it a little more often." Frank is one of those "real inventors".

Amazing....

I met Frank many years ago thru my business, what an amazing fellow. I am intriqued and honored to know him. I finished his book in 2 days and amazed at the knowledge this man has. I will continue to listen to his words of wisdom and learn, hopefully I can absorb as much as I can. Frank please continue to put to print so that your knowledge will live on and teach the future and myself...GodSpeed..

One of the most compelling books I have read in several years. Mr. Reick appealed to my sense of adventure. Most important I found that his logic infiltrates his invention style... proving time after time his ability to feel the market pulse and the need for a product or device to commercially satisfy both the consumer and Industry.

You won't be disappointed

Kate Forsyth's ability to keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting anxiously to discover what will happen next is uncanny, and once again proven in this book. The world she has created (which began in the first book, The Witches of Eileanan) has taken on a life of it's own and simply grows stronger with each addition to the series.
In this book, The Skull of the World, the 5th book of the Witches of Eileanan series, we find ourselves once again with Isabeau (who was absent from the 4th book, The Forbidden Land, as The Forbidden Land and The Skull of the World occur at the same time on Eileanan. They were originally one book which was split into two for size reasons) during her self-imposed exile on the Spine of the World. Isabeau has immersed herself in the life of the Khan'cohbans when the time comes to undertake her journey of initiation to the Skull of the World. It is on this difficult journey that Isabeau will (finally) discover her true Talent.
With splendid surprises around every corner, lurking dangers, and returning characters that you can easily come to love, adore, hate, and even fear, this book comes to life as much as (if not more than) the last four in the series. You will not be disappointed.

Isabeau is SO back

Book five of the series, the Skull of the World, brings us back to Isabeau and all of her complexity as a character. Introduced to us as an innocent orphan, fledgling witch, and impulsive girl, she is now a woman, who has lived adventure, suffered torture, endure privations, found her twin sister and both of her parents, and reared a child. She has been studying with the Kahn'cohbans, her father's tribe of fierce faery warriors, learning discipline, fighting, and survival skills, and the skills of their Soul Sage. She makes the perilous journey to the Skull of the World to find her name and her totem. Her education with the Kahn'cohbans complete, she returns to her own people, to take her Test and be inducted into the Coven of Witches. She then begins to study in earnest so that she can pass her Sorceress Test.

Lachlan and Iseult are away during this time, caught up in the action of book four. While they are away, the royal children are kidnapped, and Isabeau is framed for the crime. Narrowly evading capture, she is the only one who can follow and rescue the children. But it is a mission that requires her to use all of her powers and wits.

Overcome with sorcery sickness from this overuse of her powers, she becomes marooned on the very island on which the former Banrigh, Maya the Ensorcellor, has been hiding. There Isabeau must confront her ambivalent feelings about Maya.

As we know the outcome of Lachlan's and Iseult's journey to Tirsollier from book four, Forsyth keeps us interested in the fate of Eileanan by bringing the sea people, the Fairgean, into focus. In addition to giving us a closer look at its people in the characters of a prince named Nila and his lover, a half-breed slave named Fand, she also gives us a look at what their priestesses have in mind for the Witches of Eileanan and the rest of the humans.

This book doesn't seem to have as much going on all at once, like some of the earlier books, partly because it is taking place at the same time as book four. I think that made it a more enjoyable read. We were allowed, with fewer interruptions, to concentrate on Isabeau, who is a wonderful, rich character, with whom we have travelled for some time. It is very satisfying to see her come into her power in this book, and you'll know she has more in store for us in the next book, The Fathomless Caves.

As the term itself already indicates, people tried to move away from the past to new concepts of the modern reality. In literature we can find a new way of representing reality, new images as well as different approaches to questions of gender and race. Although I will mainly concentrate on the treatment of gender issues the other concepts mentioned will be introduced as well. One of the most representative figures in modernist fiction is the author Virginia Woolf, who was re-discovered in the 2nd wave of feminism during the 1960s and 70s (Marcus, p.209). Her texts are still used as key evidence for a new/modern way of writing as well as for the analysis of gender questions. Woolf will be in the centre of attention in the following analysis of gender issues in modernist texts. However, other modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and James Joyce are as well included to mark contrasts.
