Many countries wanted a share in the wealth, including France, which, in the years between 1849 and 1851, was undergoing major changes itself, which in turn contributed to the French romanticizing of the gold quest.||Based on extensive primary accounts, including newspapers, advertising posters, passenger lists, court records and documents, and personal letters, //Rush to Gold// is an exemplary model of original research. The scope covers the original French skepticism about the heralded wealth, through acceptance, to fantasy belief in riches just waiting to be scooped up by anyone brave enough go get them. The cost to go was high, and various schemes were designed to get individuals and groups to the New World. The author covers implications for family members left behind, the rise and fall of various investment companies, the adventurers' experiences //en route// and in the mines, the interactions between the French and other groups in California, and the ultimate result of the venture.||It is an interesting account, well-written. Although on the stage of world history the subject is small, this book is an exhaustive and impressive compilation of an event that had a great impact on many ordinary individuals.

Poems of longing and seperation

This is one of my favorite anthologies of poetry, worth reading repeatedly. It captures the spirit of a man, so much like us all, who longs for that something beyond the next hill or behind the wistful smile. How many of us sense intuitively that life is wrapped in a mystery, the veil of separation thin? Hesse's poetry, like his novels, reminds me that even though the inner meaning to life often seems just beyond my reach, it is none the less to be found in the quotidian activities of breathing the fresh air, cutting the finger on the edge of a dish, or listening to Bach as I clean the garage. Written almost 90 years ago, his poetry still rings true to the wandering steppenwolfe in each one of us. "The Gate of Heaven is everywhere."
You may also be captivated by another moving anthology of poetry, "Against Forgetting". It is an anthology of 20th century poems of witness, suffering, and hope.

A Fascinating Glimpse into Hesse's Poetic Mind

It is unfortunate, though Hesse always thought of himself first as a poet, readers who are not fluent in German rarely get to read any of his poetry. Highly lyrical and Romantic, Hesse's poems remind his readers that the world he was most comfortable in was the creation of the German poets in the century which preceded him. Highly reminiscent of Holderin with a bit of Goethe thrown in for style, all of the poems selected are eminently readable. James Wright has gone for a literal translation, and in many cases causes the poems to loose the musical charm his words have in German. For those who, like me, are critical of translations, the German text for each poem is also included. Anyone with an interest in Hesse or in the twentieth century canon should defintely read this book.

It shows the excellent ability of Hesse in mastering both styles of writing. His style in writing poems is magnificant, and very clear. I am sure the translation is still weaker than the original german language, but nevertheless it is a highly recommended book to read.
If you are a Hesse fan, you will enjoy this even more.

Von Gesetzen, Urteilen und deren Auswirkungen“ beschäftigt sich mit der in Österreich geltenden Gesetzeslage zu Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen. Sie geht im Speziellen der Frage nach, welche gesetzlichen Grundlagen Schwangerschaftsabbrüche in Österreich ermöglichen und wie aktuelle Gerichtsurteile, die auf diesen Gesetzen basieren, das Handeln der Ärzte und Schwangeren beeinflussen können. So erscheinen besonders die erst kürzlich in den Medien präsenten Entscheidungen des obersten Gerichtshofes interessant, da ihre Auswirkungen auf unsere Gesellschaft hinsichtlich der Einstellung gegenüber Menschen mit Behinderung schwerwiegende Folgen haben.
Mittels ausführlicher Literaturrecherche – vorwiegend in juridischen Fachbüchern und im Internet – soll diese Arbeit sowohl einen Einblick in Österreichs Gesetze geben, als auch das Verständnis dieser bessern, um so die Entscheidungen des Höchstgerichtes fachlich verstehen und kritisch hinterfragen zu können.

Zu Beginn dieser Seminararbeit werden die verschiedenen Typisierungen des Schwangerschaftsabbruches erläutert. Dabei wird noch kein Bezug auf die spezielle Situation in Österreich genommen, sondern ein allgemeiner, international gültiger Einblick gegeben.
Aufbauend darauf wird die aktuelle Gesetzeslage in Österreich dargestellt, da sie die Hauptgrundlage für die weitere Argumentation bildet. Ein kritischer Blick auf diese Gesetze und ihre historische Entwicklung sollen ihre Schwachpunkte zeigen.
Darauf folgend werden zwei aktuelle Fälle der österreichischen Rechtssprechung vorgestellt und in Bezug zur Situation von Menschen mit Behinderung gesetzt.
In der abschließenden Conclusio sollen die Ergebnisse dieser Seminararbeit zusammengefasst werden und einige finale Überlegungen zum Nachdenken anregen.

Auf originelle und subtile Weise verbindet er Körper- und Sinneserfahrungen mit einer akustische Spurensuche in der Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus. Die Gewalt der Nazis wird hier zunächst als eine mediale vorgeführt. Interessant ist hierbei, dass der Autor nicht nur das Medium des Schallspeichers als Machtinstrument des Dritten Reichs literarisch umsetzt, es erläutert und ihm nahezu grenzenlose Möglichkeiten zuerkennt.
Diese Ausarbeitung beschäftigt sich im Folgenden besonders mit der Person Karnau, anhand dessen inneren Monologs die Faszination mit Stimme und Sprache deutlich wird, und sowohl Möglichkeiten als auch Grenzen der Sprache offen gelegt werden. Des weiteren werden einige der wichtigen Leitmotive des Romans besprochen und ein Versuch des Transfers des Taubstummenmotivs auf die nationalsozialistische Gesellschaft unternommen. Damit einhergehend wird die totalitäre Sprache eines Regimes, dass durch die Gewalt der Stimme und des Wortes sich ein Volk untertan machte, zunächst im Allgemeinen diskursiv untersucht, und schließlich dann anhand eines Beispiels veranschaulicht. Das Schweigen als solches bedarf gründlicher Beobachtung, um zu klären um welche Art des Schweigens es sich hier handelt und welche Bedeutung ihm gleich kommt Der Schweigebegriff wird darüber hinaus auf seine Wertigkeit im Roman untersucht. Auch die Verantwortung der schweigenden Massen gegenüber den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen in Deutschland, und insbesondere die Karnaus, als Intellektueller, Akustiker und Mensch, gerade gegenüber Helga, bedarf eingehender Betrachtung.
Da es bislang keine Sekundärliteratur zu Marcel Beyer oder seinem Werk gibt, wendet sich diese Hausarbeit über eine allgemeine Herangehensweise, unter Berücksichtigung der jeweiligen Standpunkte zum Schweigen, schließlich den spezifischen Passagen des Textes zu. Letztlich ist diese Arbeit ein Versuch, den Standpunkt Karnaus, der stellvertretend für viele Deutsche stehen kann, herauszukristallisieren. Handelt es sich um einen Betroffenen, der geläutert aus der Geschichte heraustritt- tragen seine Gedankengespinste und Exkurse zu einer Entwicklung seiner selbst bei, erkennt er letztlich Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Schweigens und versucht diese zu überwinden oder dreht er sich im Kreis? Gewissheiten entpuppen sich im Roman als subjektive Konstruktionen der Protagonisten. Hat man es mit ihren Erfindungen oder ihren Wahrheiten zu tun? Und was, so lautet die Frage, ist überhaupt die Wahrheit?

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Ältere Deutsche Literatur, Mediävistik, Note: 2,0, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Germanistisches Institut; Abteilung Literatur des Mittelalters), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar: Das Nibelungenlied, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Nibelungenlied gehört zu den bekanntesten Heldenepen des klassischen Hochmittelalters und markiert als Hauptwerk der höfischen Periode der Literatur einen literarischen Neubeginn um 1200. Die Entstehung ist zwischen 1170 und 1230 sehr unsicher datiert und die Überlieferung umreißt einen Zeitraum von rund 300 Jahren. Zwischen dem zweiten Viertel des 13. Jahrhunderts bis zum zweiten Jahrzehnt des 16. Jahrhunderts ist das Nibelungenlied in 35 Schriften nachzuweisen. Dabei zeigt die Überlieferung von rund elf fast vollständig und 24 in Bruchstücken erhaltenen Zeugnissen, dass das Nibelungenlied auf eine hohe zeitgenössische Resonanz stieß.1 Die Klage, die des öfteren von der Handlung des Epos abweicht und als eigenständige Dichtung zu verstehen ist folgt in den meisten Fällen dem Nibelungenlied nach.
Die Hundeshagensche Handschrift ist also eine von vielen überlieferten Handschriften, doch sie ist die einzige, die farbige Illustrationen enthält. Sie zählt zu der sogenannten Not-Guppe.2 Da dieser Kodex eine einmalige Stellung in der Überlieferung einnimmt, bedarf sie einer eigenständigen Untersuchung.
Hierbei sollen als erstes die Basisinformationen erörtert werden. Dazu zählt zu aller erst die Erläuterung zur Faksimileausgabe Hans Hornungs, der als Erster und bisher Einziger die Illustrationen in Originalgröße und an ihrer angestammten Positionen innerhalb der Hundeshagenschen Handschrift veröffentlichte. Zuvor hatte schon Hermann Degering die Abbildungen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, allerdings nutzte er dazu die Übersetzung Simrocks und löste die Miniaturen von ihren ursprünglichen Stellen an den Aventuirenenden oder Anfängen.
Zweitens soll dann der Aufbau des Hundeshagenschen Kodex und anschließend die Schrift des Kodex betrachtet werden. Abschließend soll versucht werden die Handschrift zeitlich einzuordnen und den Entstehungsort zu entschlüsseln. Dazu werden diverse Fakten wie Dialektik, Papier, Schrift und Schreiber sowie Namenseinträge und mögliche Aufbewahrungsorte zur Hilfe herangezogen.
Anschließend werden dann drei Illustrationen der Handschrift exemplarisch betrachtet. Da nicht alle Miniaturen durchleuchtet werden können, werden lediglich die Bildseiten Nummer drei, zwölf und vierzehn genauer beschrieben. Die Wahl fiel auf diese drei Bildseiten, da sie meiner Meinung nach entweder wichtige Aspekte des Nibelungenliedes darstellen, weil sie in der Betrachtung schwer zu deuten sind oder darstellerische Besonderheiten aufweisen.

Thundercats Meets 300!

Magnificent! That pretty much sums up how I feel about this graphic novel. Its action packed, filled with tidbits of comic relief, and the characters resemble some of my favorites from television and other novels. It's a refreshing journey through the day in the life of an Orc, a misunderstood member of the Elder Races that are a lot smarter than other creatures give them credit for. Once I started reading their story, I could not stop, consuming all 208 pages of death, blood, betrayal, and redemption. It was magical, fun, and just what I needed as a break from all my usual vampire/werewolf romance novels.

The story itself is set in a land called Maras-Dantia that is inhabited by a variety of creatures known as the Elder Races. They had all learned to coexist until a new race, the Humans, emerge and threaten to take control of their lands. The story is a bit contrived in this aspect, like other stories before it such as Avatar, humans come along and destroy the homeland of various creatures and the creatures have to defend themselves. However, the human race is also divided among itself between those who are tolerant of other races and those who only want a pure race worshiping one true God. Cliché I know, but in Orcs: Forged for War it works.

Wonderful!

Reason for Reading: I felt in the mood for some high fantasy and this sounded like it would fit the bill.

Stan Nicholls has written two trilogies set in the Orcs universe and this is the first graphic novel addition to this universe. It is not an adaptation of previous material, but a new story which is set before the "First Blood" trilogy making it a prequel of sorts. I have not read any of the other books in this series and it is not necessary. The author has written a six page introduction which, although he says you need not know any background information, he has taken the effort to place the story within context of his Orcs universe for the uninitiated. I read the Intro and thoroughly enjoyed the graphic novel without having even heard of these books before, though I would be interested in them, if I ever get my obsession for high fantasy back.

The story takes the point of view of the Orcs. Orcs are always the bad guys in fantasy stories and here we have them being the good guys, well, at least not as bad as the others involved. We are shown another side of Orcs. They have feelings, camaraderie, customs and traditions. The story involves a mission a group of warriors are sent on by the cruel Queen who rules their side of a larger war. This is just one battle within that war.

The story is typical high fantasy with lots of different creatures: elves, goblins, ogres, etc. but with the orcs as the good guys. I really enjoyed the story and read it in one sitting. The book is not for the weak of heart though. It is incredibly violent, heads seem to fly on every other page, blood oozes and squirts through each battle scene, limbs are severed and swords cut heads in half. The language is rated "R" and female top-half nudity is occasionally shown. Not a book for little ones or those sensitive to these types of things. I'm usually not partial to swearing but in the context here it would only be natural for these brutal, violent creature to speak thus. A good story from a unique angle.

This graphic novel is a nice quick read. I finished it with in two lunch beaks and would read it again. It is also beautifully drawn and I can not wait for the next book to come out.
