The stories in Raffel's first collection are like privet hedges: smooth and clipped, they fastidiously control what is revealed. The implication for the reader is double-edged; one can either be frustrated by the author's self-conscious, highly stylized prose or delighted that she trusts enough to leave so much detective work to the reader. In "The Trick," for example, she writes of a couple: "They were somewhere other than under the quilt"-a ruffling sentence perhaps, but one whose construction parodies the adulterous characters' inability to speak in direct terms. "The trick is not to think," explains another character in the same tale. Several of the 16 stories here deal beautifully with the mother-daughter or father-daughter bond, and the title story illustrates one opinion about the differences between male and female socialization: the boys in the story are all "holler and tilt," while the "squealing-clean" girls watch the world through a window pane. More than anything else, though, it is the cold beauty of Raffel's writing that takes hold of the reader, allowing these brief stories, many of which were first published in the Quarterly, to transcend the limiting category of experimental fiction. Raffel has the ability to turn the tiniest details into poetry.

"Oh, for the sun to heal the ache," says the mother in the title story of this book. Sunlight is exactly the right prescription for most of the tortured characters in these stories. But they don't get much of it. Instead, gusty winds blow and icy temperatures descend upon the towns. In spite of difficult circumstances and even tragedy, most characters are gritty survivors who are nevertheless adrift and alone. Rarely does the author name anyone or describe someone's appearance, thereby reinforcing the sense of alienation and loneliness. It seems to require almost too much effort for the nameless characters to speak in sentences; they mete out language sparingly, using only a few words and giving perfunctory replies. Raffel, fiction editor of Redbook magazine, is in command of the bleak landscape of her stories and the bleak characters in it. She lets in a very few rays of sunlight. And she will make readers appreciate having friends to turn to for comfort and support. Recommended for serious fiction collections.

Striking, strangely moving and lovely

Dawn Raffel's In the Year of Long Division is a collection of vivid, imagistic vignettes that flow like poetry and stun like an Edward Albee micro-act. Originally published by Knopf in the mid '90s, it's been rereleased as an ebook by the visionaries at Dzanc. Back then the San Francisco Chronicle called it "dreamlike"; Minneapolis City pages said it was "tremendously innovative". I still agree with both (and all the other kudos Raffel got back then), but as I read these stories again today - in an entirely different skin, different millenium, different world - it struck me how perfectly it plays in the new medium. This book wears its fresh incarnation particularly well. (That's not always the case with resurrected books I've read, even if I loved them the first time around.)

I used to have this book on the "shelf of yesness" in my office; that's where I kept books that challenged me as a reader and inspired me as a writer. I'm a huge fan of Raffel's fearless style; you can count on her to leap the turnstile when it comes to literary or genre convention, but somehow in the strangeness she manages to drive these needles of *yes* into your heart like a ninja poet acupuncturist.

Anyway, several years ago, in a fit of heatstroke-driven altruism in the wake of Hurricane Ike, I turned my yellow VW bug into a guerrilla book mobile and gave all my books away. I've been trying to rebuild that library on Kindle and Nook ever since. So a huge thank you to Dzanc for loving this book as much as I did.

Required by seminary professor (he is the author) for Koine Greek Course. Book is designed to cover all verb forms in ancient greek using 2 verbs as models.
This is volume 2, volume 1 is a must to be able to cope with second one.

Great ending to a great series

Book six, The Fathomless Caves, is a great ending to the Witches of Eileanan series. Though I can see points at which the author could branch off to write other books, there is definately a satifsying closure for the main characters and action.
Leading up to the final trial, which is a no holds barred, battle to the death that stretches everyone to their limits, there is a test of the royal marriage, Iseult's return to the Spine of the World, a confrontation between Lachlan and Isabeau regarding his behavior toward her, Maya's capture by the Righ, and Isabeau's confronting of her personal demons and her feelings regarding Dide the Jugglar.
The main focus of the action here is the war with the Fairgean, the sea people who are sworn enemies of the humans. Obviously, they are bad creatures, because they keep coming up onto the human's land and killing everyone, even children, raping women, taking slaves, all that bad war stuff. But Forsyth does the same thing in characterizing the Fairgean as a people that she does with her individual characters. She shows them as a product of their experiences, most specifically, their experiences with the humans over the last few hundred years. The humans come to be seen as less than virtuous, less than completely in the right, and the Fairgean become not quite the mindless villains they may have seemed. One wonders if, with hundreds of years of history of war and attempted genocide, these people could ever find a way to coexist. And whereas a few books ago we might not have been upset had the humans managed to wipe out the Fairgean completely, now that we have met a few and are seeing them as a people, that no longer seems a viable option for a good ending. Or is it?
The struggle between these two peoples becomes something like a good romance novel. You know both sides have their flaws, and everything's against them, but you really want them to work it out, no matter how much it hurts.
Well, you throw that in with all the individual conclusions, and the amazing action of the finale, and it makes for a great ending.
I have enjoyed this series immensely. It's great to read strong female characters, especially when those characters are actually women, and not just more guys in drag with girlie names. The characterization is brilliant, with characters who continue to grow, from the first pages to the last, who make mistakes, who fall into peril, but who, while ever-changing, mangage to hold on to a sense of self that made you fall for them in the first place. The imagery is lovely, and varied, and the use of Celtic and Wiccan lore highly enjoyable.
If you're coming to read this review not having read any other the other books, I would suggest you look up The Witches of Eileanan, because you deserve to enjoy this from the very beginning. It will be worth getting here the long way.

okay conclusion to a good series

The conclusion of the Witches of Eileanan is good, maybe not as good as some of the earlier books in the series, but good. Iseult travels away to get the support of her mountain people, leaving Lachlan feeling very forlorn. In addition, the war against the sea creatures is not going so well. Meanwhile, Isabeau is struggling to finish her training as quickly as possible while a certain wandering musician struggles to catch her eye. The end of this series was a little anticlimactic to me, but still very interesting and definitely worth reading if you've made it this far in the series. The whole series gets the thumbs up.

Awesome books, awesome writer.

A while back, after I had just finnished this book, I e-mailed Kate Forsyth, not really expecting anything in return. I thought to myself, those books are REALLY good. She'll never have time to read all her fanmail, much less write back.
Whoa was I surprised. The email I got was not a two word reply but two paragraphs about what I had asked! Not only are the books fantastic, but the Author was super- nice!
Well, as nice as she was, the books she wrote were even better. From beginning to end, they are captivating. The hardships of war and peace, trust and denial, are all played out fully in these colorful works. Thank you Kate Forsyth for a fabulous read. It doesn't get much better than that!

Zunächst werde ich auf die Geburtsszenerie eingehen und deren Anordnung und Ausgestaltung im Zusammenhang mit den zur Meditationsliteratur gehörigen Revelationes erläutern. Daran schließt die nähere Betrachtung der Hebammenepisode sowie deren apokrypher Textvorlagen an. Dass die campinsche Darstellung der Geburt Christi in der Auswahl der Textquellen als eine Art ikonographisches Pasticcio erscheint, zeigen des Weiteren die aus dem Neuen Testament übernommenen Hirten und Engel, sowie Ochs und Esel, die erstmals im apokryphen Evangelium des Pseudo-Matthäus erwähnt wurden.
Im Anschluss an die ikonographischen Erläuterungen der Hauptszenen soll das Augenmerk auf weitere kleinere Deutungszusammenhänge gelenkt werden, wie beispielsweise die Lichtquellen im Bild, den Stall und die Landschaft. Dies geschieht abschließend jedoch nicht ohne eine gewisse Kritik an teilweise schwer nachvollziehbaren Interpretationen in der Forschungsliteratur.

I do entirely enjoy the Cathy Glass books

I do entirely enjoy the Cathy Glass books. This particular series, while over-priced given the full page count, was well-well-written, giving the background story of the negligent mother and abusive boyfriend that cared for Lucy until she was finally removed by an even more negligent foster care agency. The book then details Cathy's success in working with Lucy and the details of her subsequent adoption. I have read the books that were written by Cathy prior to this one, and after going through this one I actually started getting a bit overwhelmed by the "goodness" of Cathy's parenting skills when compared to my own. For any out there with adopted or fostered kids, just beware that it is likely you may also feel discouraged if your own story is not ending as well as Cathy's always seem to.

well as I always say I have always enjoyed Cathy Glass's writing. I be-leave her to be a beautiful and caring foster carer. the only thing I may have been a little disappointed me in these three books it has some of the same story lines. I would recommend it as a good read if you like true stories.

I found the story very interesting. I am very happy that Cathy got Lucy and made a home for her.
There are so many children who are abused and negleted that fall thru the cracks of the system because of lack of good foster homes.

Ernst Bohlmeijer is a senior lecturer at the University of Twente. He has a special interest in narrative psychology, in working with life stories in healthcare and in the role of mindfulness, acceptance and values in promoting mental health.

Bringing spiritual ideas to a practical level

The basic ideas of the book are not new in itself. `Living in the present moment' is a spiritual approach to life that has come to the western world a while ago. But while authors like Tolle (e.g. the power of now) or Kabat-Zinn (e.g. full catastrophe living) interested a more spiritual audience, this book brings the basic reflections to a very practical and easy applicable format that can even be applied in classroom or other forms of group work. Thereby the book bridges the highly spiritual roots of its ideas (stemming from Buddhism) with a very down-to-earth step-by-step guide for all kinds of audiences. The authors take the reader by the hand and provide a number of valuable exercises and practices to approach a mindful way of living.
Moreover, the books' structure is segmented in a way that only a choice of exercises (considered most useful and appropriate by the reader) may be applied in a large variety of contexts - with individuals or when working with groups. As for myself, I am using some of the exercises in my entrepreneurship classes with business students from diverse cultural backgrounds in form of inspirational sessions. This seems to be particularly useful, as a mindful approach is essential to staying focused in a constantly changing entrepreneurship environment.
The major value of the book may thus be seen in its practical, step-by-step format to living a life in the present moment - written in a format that is easily accessible to a large audience.

an immediate classic in environmental politics for all kinds of readers

I bought this book on a recommendation, but I was 50 pages in before I realized how far off my subliminal expectations had been -- much as many people described within missed the point of the Tellico Dam controversy in the mid-70s. I expected a fairly narrow rehash of legal arguments surrounding, y'know, the snail darter and the dam. Instead, Plater tells a story that involves an astonishing variety of themes in environmental politics -- or, really, American politics generally -- so engagingly that I got out of bed at 11:30 PM to finish it. (It's not that I "couldn't put it down," only that I couldn't sleep when I did!)

Grassroots activists fighting for their land? Bureaucratic intrigue? Strategic and philosophical debates? Courtroom drama? Congressional shenanigans? All those things and more are in here, not as plot contrivances, but as the real deal. If you care about politics, or even if you think you're past the point of caring, this story will draw you in.

Does it really make sense to read a book about some controversy from the 1970s? In this case, absolutely. Not only is the Tellico story compelling in its own right, but as Plater tells it, it provides a template for understanding a broad swath of environmental policy conflicts. Not that Plater shoves some theoretical framework down readers' throats: he simply writes with such clarity and intensity that we can't help but think more clearly about how the parts connect.

Yale University Press has done fabulous work with this book -- it reads better than most best-selling fiction. (Of course Plater deserves huge credit for that, but so does the press.) But the book description does not do justice. "In a narrative that dispels widespread misperceptions about the environmental battle against the TVA’s final dam project...." Yes, it does, but that isn't the point. Misperception is a ubiquitous process, not just an abstract "thing" that one might have about some past event. Environmental activists almost always struggle to convey their side of a policy conflict, for many reasons, which this book illuminates as evocatively as any I've ever read. Plater doesn't provide a dry punch list of dos and don'ts, but you're very likely to find yourself drawing parallels to other issues. Not only does much of the Tellico story read as if it happened yesterday (some specifics aside), but it feels urgently relevant for today and tomorrow.

Riveting and heartbreaking story

As Zyg's daughter, I have heard the story of the snail darter case for as long as I can remember. Reading his accessibly-written and riveting book still added many layers of complexity to my understanding of the case and amplified disturbing revelations about the way that government works. The Snail Darter and the Dam shows how difficult it is for citizen activists with the facts on their side, but without significant funding, to halt an unnecessary, wasteful, and harmful project. Zyg depicts Washington as a labyrinth that is almost impenetrable to outsiders. The amount of effort that he and the Little T River's supporters had to put into trying to be heard over industry lobbyists and biased media is astounding and depressing. Keeping track of all of the people these activists had to appeal to and following the bureaucratic tangles of launching the lawsuit was illuminatingly exhausting. That so many activists came together--working tirelessly to almost achieve the impossible is a message of hope within a story of loss.

The snail darter's home in the last flowing section of the Little T is now a muddy lake, surrounded by mansions, with luxury yachts navigating around silos that stand as eerie reminders of the family farms that once thrived there. I hope that this book helps make this unspeakable loss a lesson in how animals, plants, fish, and humans suffer together when greed wins. I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone interested in environmentalism, politics, or interesting stories!

A Sad Story Told Well

Professor Plater gives us the "rest of the story" of this landmark case. The snail darter/Tellico Dam conflict, as portrayed in the media, is perhaps the most overly (and wrongly)-simplified environmental controversy of modern times. It is high time the full and true story of this sad debacle was told, and Plater has told it well.

Tellico Dam is one of the last two dams conceived in the 1930s as components of a valley-wide system of 69 dams and reservoirs involving both the Tennessee River and several of its major tributaries. The other was the Columbia Dam, which also encountered endangered species obstacles and which has now been de-authorized. These two dams were deservedly last on the Tennessee Valley Authority's construction plans, given the dubious economic benefits and high environmental costs associated with both.

TVA, the only remaining New Deal agency, deserves much credit for its role in bringing electrical power, flood control, and navigation benefits to its namesake valley. But the agency's devious and conniving actions in the defense of its last (one hopes) dam and reservoir project have created an indelible blot on its reputation. Plater documents the less than ethical--and sometimes downright Machiavellian--excesses of the agency and its powerful Chairman, Aubrey "Red" Wagner, in their relentless determination to justify and complete this unjustifiable and unnecessary pork-barrel project.

In his riveting history of the heroic struggle of dedicated landowners and citizen-environmentalists to halt the construction of the Tellico Dam, Plater powerfully puts the lie to the popular but wildly oversimplifed notion of a "tiny fish versus big dam." There was strong opposition to the Tellico Dam project for years before the discovery of the snail darter in 1973. In 1969, no less a figure than Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas penned a lengthy article in a national magazine describing, and protesting, the losses that would result from the proposed impoundment of the Little Tennessee River--losses of prime farmland, Native American historical and archaeological resources and recreation (including, according to Douglas, "possibly the best trout stream in the entire southeast").

Shrewdly assisted by Plater--then a young law professor at the University of Tennessee,later at Wayne State and Boston College--the opponents of the dam succeeded each step of the way but one in blocking TVA's efforts to complete the project and destroy their beloved river valley. In a decade-long battle, they defeated TVA in the courts and prevailed before the so-called "God Committee" of the Endangered Species Act, only to have their hearts broken and hopes dashed by a fiat declaration of the U.S Congress exempting the dam from the jurisdiction of that act and from "any other law." The power games and sleazy maneuvering that attained this outcome are recounted by Plater in agonizing detail, confirming Bismarck's aphorism that,"Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made."
