The Eyes of Wonder

This collection of essays is glorious and sad. The writing lets the reader see what Barry Lopez is seeing with so few precise words. The gifts of wilderness are felt while reading sentences like, "You could feel the creek vibrating in the silt and sand.". The saddness comes from knowing these essays were written in the 1980's and so much more has been destroyed since then.
Due to when this book was written, there are a couple of references to former President Reagan's "environmental record" written in real time.
There were so many essays that I loved, including the one speaking of traveling the river with Paul Winter. I am going to quote a passage from "Children in the Woods".
"The quickest door to open in the woods for a child is the one that leads to the smallest room, by knowing the name each thing is called. The door that leads to the cathedral is marked by a hesitancy to speak at all, rather to encourage by example a sharpness of the senses. If one speaks it should only be to say, as well as one can, how wonderfully all this fits together, to indicate what a long, fierce peace can derive from this knowledge."

Door to a cathedral of nature

Lopez is concerned with our collective understanding of nature. From studying a 3000-year-old horse intaglio to looking for Anasazi granaries he seeks our ancestral relationships. The essays work best when he mixes his reflection with keen observations. Where the essays have a heavier philosophical hand they aren't as effective. As he says "The door that leads to the cathedral is marked by a hesitancy to speak at all, rather to encourage by example, a sharpness of the senses". Lopez 's narratives sharpen many senses from the sudden assault of the sound of snow geese to "two snails small as pinheads chewing a leaf".
There are reflections on the role of biologists, from communicating between scientists and shipmates in the arctic to their role in a whale stranding. Perhaps he thinks biologists have greater insight, but he also understands the need for mystery and direct experience.
For Paul Winter fans there is a description of the raft down the Grand Canyon that produced the album "Canyon". As a current update, the snow geese written about in one essay are continuing to boom and damage their arctic breeding grounds.

Are you interested in fine, artistic prose mixed with a keen knowledge and observation of nature? This man is a wonderful writer who will make you feel and learn. Crossing Open Ground is an easy and fast read great for a weekend away from winter's dark days, a warm bath, a wait at an airport...OK, anywhere at any time. If you have never read any Lopez start now; you will not be disappointed. If you have read him but wonder about this book... I have read three of his others and this one stands with them all.

A Very Special Book

I just saw this in a book store yesterday and was drawn immediately to it by the title alone.

As soon as I started reading through it, I knew it was something special and that I'd buy it.

The photography and words are warm and loving, and it makes me long to own a place like Bedlam Farm filled with four-footed friends like this.

It's a real winner.

FUN!!

I've read ALL Jon Katz' books... he's got a way with words! This is his first children's books, and it's about (of course) his dogs!!! (and the farm)... The pictures (he took them all himself) are awesome, the presentation is beautiful and the story is heartwarming! All good!!!

A Treasure of a Book!

This is a very sweet book. The interesting photography captures the different personalities of the four dogs, and the simple text fits the subject well. It was the wonderful surprise ending of this book, however, that put lumps in our throats and regrets that it had to be returned to the library. I've since bought copies for ourselves and others, including my sensitive almost-11-year-old daughter, who specifically asked for this simple children's picture book for Christmas.

Das Wissen um Johannes Hadlaub als einem althochdeutschen Minnesänger ist nicht unbedingt sehr umfangreich, selbst wenn man in der Schule etwas über die Literatur des Mittelalters gelernt hat. Er steht im Schatten berühmterer Vorgänger und Zeitgenossen, deren Werke große Berühmtheit erlangt haben. So sind z.B. die Namen Walther von der Vogelweide und Gottfried von Straßburg durchaus geläufiger als der Name des Züricher Bürgers Hadlaub. Auch die Werke der großen Minnesänger sind oftmals bekannter als diejenigen Hadlaubs. Dabei darf man aber nicht vergessen, dass die Texte vieler mittelalterlicher Autoren uns heute nur deshalb noch bekannt sind, weil sie Teil eines einmaligen Überlieferungswerkes sind: der Manessischen Liederhandschrift. Diese entstand um die Jahrhundertwende des 13./14. Jahrhunderts – also zu Lebzeiten Hadlaubs – in Zürich, dem Wohnort des Dichters. Es ist sogar wahrscheinlich, dass er selbst an der Entstehung dieses Werkes beteiligt war. Seinem Œuvre wurden die ersten Blätter der Handschrift gewidmet und das in dieser Arbeit behandelte Lied „Ach, mir was lange“ steht noch dazu am Anfang seines Liedcorpus. Dieses Lied gehört zu der Gruppe der Erzähllieder oder „Romanzen“, die einen ersten Teil epischen Charakters aufweisen und in einem zweiten Teil eine Minneklage enthalten. Leppin vermutet, dass Hadlaub „größeren Wert auf die Behandlung der Minneproblematik“ legte. Die Bedeutung des erzählenden Eingangsteiles soll – unter Berücksichtigung des Inhalts der darauf folgenden Minnereflexion – am Beispiel von „Ach, mir was lange“ untersucht und hinsichtlich des im Thema der Arbeit formulierten Spannungsfeldes problematisiert werden.

Van Engen's work, God's Missionary People, looks to assess the current state of missions. Looking to address areas of neglect and offering corrective via a refocusing of the Church's current perspective of missions. He recognizes missional ecclesiology as an area historically neglected showing that there has been little agreement between the Church and its understanding of missions throughout most of the 20th century (27). He posits that the Church needs to understand its missiological and eschatological role more clearly. We see that the universality of missions is the very aspect, through which the local church becomes the Church universal (33). A re-envisioning of the Church is possible when we recognize that, although constitutionally made up of by humanity, it is not human hands that build it. "This is at once the sociological theology and the theological sociology of the Church (44).
The author suggests the necessary "attributes" towards universal catholicity, apostolicity and unity need to be developed in the Church by recognizing its position of "sentness" in the Churches apostolic role (76). This is similar to Christ making "his dwelling among us" ; just as Jesus lived in the community so too must we. It must be seen that the missionary Church emerges when its members increasingly participate with their churches "being-in-the-world", and this through understanding the koinonia, kerygma, diakonia, and the martyria. It is through this lens that we see that by loving one another, recognizing the Lordship of Christ, reaching out to the least of the brethren and spreading the witness of reconciliation that the Church can be recognized, as it is through Christ that our "supreme authenticating sign of its own existence" can be realized (90). Van Engem recognizes the concept of missions as being cyclical in nature, in that just as the world needs the Church so to the Church needs the world (126). Looking to the "dialectical paradigm of modern ecclesiology" we see missions viewed both "from above" and "from below" (135). And it is in this we emerge through the very building of ourselves as a Church.
Van Engen looks to develop leadership on a very different model, as the old definition of leadership is inadequate to fit the needs of the local church. This he explains as corporate, with each member of the church playing a vital role in this communal leadership style (165). Although he does recognize that leadership is dynamic with many vicissitudes, being difficult to pin down to a specific praxis, stating; "leadership styles are never static" (174).
This book is well researched and footnoted, with the back of each chapter containing a section covering multiple authors from various disciplines for further study that are topical to each chapter. With 18 pages of biography the book also has a subject index at the very end of the book followed by a scripture index. In this reviewer's opinion this book, once read through fully, should be kept available for quick reference. It as a research tool I plan to keep on my main bookshelf.

Interesting Yet Curious Perspectives

Charles van Engen is a leading missiologist. In keeping with the subtitle of his book: "Rethinking the Purpose of the Local Church", he briefly sets ecclesiology and missiology in historical and contemporary perspective, then introduces "a new perspective".

He refers to his view of missions as a "radically new way of affirming the congregation's missionary nature" -- a break with the past twenty centuries of ecclesiology and missiology. While the received definition of missions is "spreading the message of His salvation to the world" (Fleming 1990:296), Van Engen defines this as "to spread throughout the world the knowledge of the rule of the King". Further, in the received view, the justified yet imperfect Church might be said to move continually upward toward God. In Van Engen's view, it moves continually forward through "the impelling force of the Kingdom of God", toward "shalom" -- "an emerging church".

While Van Engen emphasises the necessity to "receive by faith the ONENESS of the church", yet he himself would appear to adopt a sharp exclusivity with regard to "missionary congregations". While he rightly points out that a defective ecclesiology may unnecessarily lead to disunity, this does not appear to translate into a generous view of unity. He defines "missionary congregations" specifically as those which are "called to spread throughout the world the knowledge of the rule of the King", and hold a non-judicial view of salvation. With this in mind, he states that "conversion . . . happens uniquely in missionary congregations". Apparently it would not happen outside of them. There is little to dispel the suspicion that the rest of the Church is of little significance in terms of the central interests of the Church.

On the surface of it, Van Engen would appear to take an uncompromising stand on "the Church's role in establishing justice, righteousness, and SHALOM". Closer examination, however, would appear to reveal a different picture. A characteristic Western duality repeatedly creeps in. He states that the Church has "a debt to the poor and oppressed" -- as though the Church should exist on one side, the poor and oppressed on the other. Not only this, but "incomplete manifestations of the working of the kingdom" are given short shrift, perhaps fatalistically. Van Engen would seem to sense the inadequacy in his views as he notes awkwardly that the Church should "at least struggle more deeply to define" its identification with the oppressed.

While Van Engen gives a useful reminder that we need to "propel the people of God out in ministry in the world", disavowals of disunity, paternalism, domination, and enculturation would surely be too easily deconstructed in his writing.

Great Resource

My daughter scored high on the chemistry test and this book was a great addition to other study tools. It is important to get an up to date version so that the student will be reviewing the most current selection of questions. She used the book and a study group of other friends who were taking the test.
I believe that it is important to purchase a book that you can later resell. This is my last child in high school and now I can recycle this book for others. My daughter liked the diagrams and practice tests.This book is a winner!
