Insbesondere über die Auswirkungen dieser Krise, die bisweilen auch als Immobilien-, Finanz- oder subprime loan-Krise bezeichnet wird, finden heftige Diskussionen statt. Wieso aber erregen nicht bediente amerikanische Hypothekenkredite so großes globales Interesse? Und in welchem Zusammenhang dazu stehen die Liquiditätsprobleme eines britischen Hypothekenfinanzierers und öffentlicher deutscher Banken? Weshalb reagiert die Europäische Zentralbank auf eine US-amerikanische Krise mit Liquiditätsspritzen?

Diese Fragestellungen werden durch die vorliegende Arbeit aus volkswirtschaftlicher Sicht beantwortet. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die geldpolitischen Reaktionen der Europäischen Zentralbank (EZB), der US-amerikanischen Federal Reserve (Fed) und der Bank of England (BoE).

Vorab ist die Verwendung des Begriffs „Liquidität“ in dieser Arbeit zu klären, da dieser in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften äußerst unterschiedlich gehandhabt wird. In der vorliegenden Arbeit ist üblicherweise von Marktliquidität (vgl. Brunnermeier/Pedersen (2007), Kaufman (1991), S. 98) die Rede, d. h. von der Abtretbarkeit eines Vermögensgegenstandes, die von der Markttiefe bestimmt wird (SVR (2007), S. 124).

Im Zusammenhang mit Notenbankaktionen hat der Begriff eine andere Bedeutung: Hier wird ein Bezug zu den Leitzinsen hergestellt und damit zu dem Preis, zu dem sich Geschäftsbanken mit Zentralbankgeld versorgen können (SVR (2007), S. 125).

Die folgenden Ausführungen machen deutlich, dass ein Eingreifen der Zentralbanken aufgrund der Geschehnisse am Geldmarkt Anfang August 2007 notwendig war. Dies ist im Wesentlichen durch die Aufgabe der Sicherung der Finanzsystemstabilität der Notenbanken zu begründen.

Nach der Betrachtung und dem Vergleich der verschiedenen geldpolitischen Aktionen ist das Verhalten der EZB und der Fed sehr positiv zu beurteilen, während die BoE durch ihr kontroverses Verhalten die Auswirkungen der Krise sogar noch verschärft hat.

Mit Erfindung der Dampfmaschine und in deren Gefolge der Industrialisierung entwickelten sich moderne Großstädte; die Urbanisierung der Bevölkerung begann. Rasant vergingen die folgenden hundert Jahre über Karl Marx und die Arbeiterbewegung bis hin zur Psychoanalyse Freuds, der Quantentheorie von Max Planck und der Relativitätstheorie Einsteins, um nur wenige umwälzende Neuerungen zu nennen. Auch die Kunst wurde mitgerissen, die Werke wurden freier, ihre Gegenständlichkeit rückte zunehmend in den Hintergrund und die Themen veränderten sich.
Mit dem Expressionismus stellten sich Maler, Bildhauer und Literaten der Abbildung und Wiedergabe des äußeren Seins entgegen und machten die inneren Empfindungen, den seelischen Ausdruck zum Motiv ihrer Arbeitsweise. Gleichzeitig war es eine Lebensform, die sich dem Krieg, dem Zerfall und den Neuerungen, die die Menschen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts beängstigten, entgegenstellte. So können auch die Unterschiede innerhalb der entstanden Kunstwerke, die heute dem Expressionismus zugeschrieben werden, erklärt werden. Ein jeder ging die aufkommende Thematik differenziert an, jeweils aus den individuellen Gefühlen heraus wurde und wird sie dementsprechend, bei den zusätzlich gegebenen regionalen und nationalen Unterschieden, unterschiedlich gestalterisch umgesetzt.
Ein Deutscher unter den „Expressionisten“ der Bildhauerei ragt allerdings hervor, Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Seine künstlerische Tätigkeit begann mit einer Ausbildung an der Künstlergewerbeschule und wurde ganz klassisch mit einen Studium an der Akademie fortgesetzt. Obschon damals erfolgreich, wandte er sich dennoch ab von dieser – seiner - Art der Kunst, die er bis 1910, er war damals 29 Jahre alt, anfertigte. Und das, obwohl seine ersten Plastiken beweisen, dass er sein Handwerk verstand und die vermeintlichen Kritiker ihm sehr wohlgesonnen entgegentraten. So nahm er das Risiko einer Absage an seine neuen Werke auf sich. Seine von innerer Bewegtheit, Seele und Ausdruck zeugenden Plastiken stießen zunächst auf Unverständnis, wurden dann in den finsteren Zeiten des Faschismus verfemt und letztlich wiederum bewundert.
An zwei ausgewählten Beispielen aus seinem Œuvre, entstanden vor und während des Ersten Weltkriegs, soll dieser Werdegang im Folgenden erläutert werden.

A sweeping re-examination of race from vantage point of loving interracial relationships, this book critically shifts away from conflicts between races toward conflicts between interracial families and society. Law professor Ouwuachi-Willig uses the romance of Alice Beatrice Rhineland and Leonard Kip Rhinelander that resulted in 1925 Supreme Court case, Rhinelander v. Rhineland, as the focal point for her investigation of today's society. She recounts the romance and marriage leading up to the publicized trial all the way through to its aftermath and lasting implications. Steering the conversation towards a critique of current legislation, Ouwuachi -Willig's draws on a variety of sources including her own experiences to humanize the disadvantages within the law that are still existent today. She highlights the way government administration indirectly separates multi-racial families into individuals, each with a discrete racial identity. In reality family is one unit within society, large enough for multiple racial identities. Her talent for blending statistics and storytelling shine as Ouwuachi -Willig passionately and logically argues to create interraciality as a protected category within the law.

Thoroughly researched and intensely personal work about multi-racial families and the law

This is a well written book that explores inter-racial relationships and multiracial families from two directions. First by examining the Rhinlander case Angela Onwauchi- Willig looks at our country's historic views of race, miscegenation, notions of race mixing and the scandalous taboo of interracial marriage. She then methodically examines how our culture has changed and evolved since Rhinelander v. Rhinelander (circa 1925) by analyzing the views and experiences shared by interracial couples who participated in surveys as part of her research.

As a person whose major heavily involved History I am honest enough to admit that I despise dry legal language and the author was kind enough to anticipate and spare those like me in this book. She takes the time to explain legal concepts and she does not dumb down the book by omitting legal terminology.

A reader gets a sense of how she examines this issue (the law and our societal view of multiracial families) from several angles - legal, historic, social and personal as a member of a multiracial family. This personal perspective enhances what could have just been a great book and makes it that much more.

It also is refreshing to see pictures of biracial couples and multiracial families; this enhances the information that comes from the very personal stories and views shared in the surveys.

This is a wonderfully written book about a subject that has been made purposefully uncomfortable in our society by design. This book takes a fresh look at this issue. The author examines this subject through the lens of legal expertise, using surveys, and from the perspective of someone in a multiracial family.

It is a thorough and ultimately personal work. More than worth the money I paid. Happy reading.

two stand-out things here

I'd argue that plenty of law professors and other scholars have written about interracial marriage and multiracial families. This book stands out in two important ways.
First, the book focuses more on blackfemale-whitemale couples than the converse. The legal case to which the author references frequently is one in which a white, wealthy man asks the court to annul his marriage because he supposedly did not know his wife was partially Black. The author is well aware that most Black-white marriages involve a Black husband with a white wife. She juggles with both how Blackfemale-whitemale couples get rendered invisible and how studying them may still be important even as society seems to punish Blackmale-whitefemale couples more blatantly.
Second, at the same time that the author condemns the misperception that all members of families are of the same race, she also includes that society assumes incorrectly that all couples are or should be heterosexual. She interviews interracial lesbian and gay male couples in addition to heterosexual ones. She implies that our world needs to accept same-sex marriages just as much as it needs to accept interracial ones. This is in great contrast to Rachel Moran's book "Interracial Intimacies" which I found to be incredibly heterosexist, even though it was published before Massachusetts began allowing gay marriage.
The extensive research on the history behind the Rhinelander case may be the third aspect that separates this book from others. In fact, I will assume that the author believes this is the greatest contribution of her work. However, if you're not interested in the history of just one case, especially as the 1960s Loving v. Virginia case has made that older case moot, you may find that aspect of the book the least interesting.

This is a short history (gave me a chance to look up what epitome meant) of Roman history up to the time of Trajan. It was a very interesting read, but, as you would expect, it's not very long and hardly detailed.

In 1912, the African American diplomat and writer James Weldon Johnson published his narrative “The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man” anonymously, and in 1917, the Jewish American editor and journalist Abraham Cahan put out his novel “The Rise of David Levinsky”. Despite all differences obvious between the authors and their protagonists, both novels nevertheless describe at their core the need to assimilate, the search for an American identity and the costs of assimilation.
In their quest for an American identity, both protagonists, the former Orthodox Jew from Russia and the anonymous, light-skinned African American, chose to escape white Anglo-Saxon Protestant hostility towards their minority status by assimilating respectively by passing as far as possible into the dominant culture of white American society. The need to assimilate derives from the fear of marginalization and the hostility shown towards minority groups in America. It is precisely this threatening attitude in combination with a longing to take part in the dominant culture of American society that finally forces these characters to assimilate respectively to pass entirely.
Despite their minority backgrounds, both protagonists manage to enter the dominant culture at last. But even though both men live up to a life of financial and social success at the end of the novels, their narratives are not simply average American success-stories, but rather tragic tales on the high costs of assimilation. Levinsky and the Ex-Colored Man live the classical American dream from “rags to riches”, but in the end, both must nevertheless realize that wealth and a high social status alone do not guarantee true inner happiness.
The conclusion seems bitter: one’s marginality and minority status must be overcome in order to take part in the “American success story”. But even though ethnic and racial backgrounds can be denied and essential parts of one’s own identity can be ignored, full assimilation can never be achieved. The successful economic and social rise of the two men cannot be separated from the tragic personal failure to find their true identity and inner happiness. In their novels, Cahan and Johnson thus voice the dreadful loss of individual identity that full assimilation and passing ask for.

Christian Moller, Dr. theol., Jahrgang 1940, war von 1965 bis 1972 Pfarrer in Wolfhagen bei Kassel, von 1972 bis 1988 Professor fur Praktische Theologie an der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal und von 1988 bis 2005 an der Universitat Heidelberg.

In the year 2162, a madman named Kazushi Nikken creates giant hybrids of humans and animals—elephants, rhinos, camels, giraffes—and brainwashes them into an army of fearless killers. But the United Nations liberates the elephantmen (they're all given that pejorative e-word, no matter their species) and integrates them into society. That's the setting for plenty of metaphor about racism, xenophobia and globalism; against this backdrop we meet hippo Hip Flask, who works for a government agency and is trying to recover a certain African idol. But Obadiah Horn, the world's most successful and high-profile elephantman, wants it too. Brief stories do a great job fleshing out the world and the major players as the larger mystery of Hip and the Idol unfold. Visually, the various artists give a nod to great dystopias past—Blade Runner via Neuromancer via Brazil—but the sepia-tinted color palette and soft, painterly shading set it apart. The character designs in particular are spectacular, and the whole is a lightning-fast but addictive read (July)

Poor binding

I love Elephantmen; the art, the story, and this is a great collection. HOwever it gets 3/5 stars because the binding easily breaks apart. Seems to be due to poor or very old glue holding the book to the cover. Otherwise a very compelling read with bold and dynamic visuals.

Cant get enought of Elephantmen

This book was a great read. The writer of this book has alot of emotions when writing this book. In the beginning ebony meets a young girl named savanna. Its kinda a heart felt moment between the two and ebony keeps having flashbacks about the war and how it has effected him. Aside from the writing, the book has tons of great artistry throught-out this book. Whenever i open this book i immediately think of blade runner in how the futuristic settings are and the overall characters. The characters have such an alluring mysterious aura about them that makes me want to get my hands on the second volume. This was actaully my first comic book ive picked up in a long time and it will diffently not be the last one also.

Recommened for any who likes blade runner and any other sci-fi genres

If you are looking for something that offers more than the usual comic book fare then you owe it to yourself to read Elephantmen. The description tells you the premise but there are so many layers to each story written by Mr. Starkings that you are left anxiously waiting for the next issue. The art by Moritat is nothing short of brilliant and the colors he uses compliment not only the fantastic art work but the storyline as well. (Moritat pencils and colors the book) This is one of the best monthly comic book titles being published but woefully under read so give it a chance, you'll be glad you did.
