Fred Whitehead is the editor, most recently, of Don Gordon's Collected Poems. He lives in Kansas City.

The Entire Range of Ferrini's Poetry Now Available

Thanks to the University of Illinois' American Poetry Recovery Series, the entire range of the work of an important American poet is now available in this handsome volume superbly edited by Kenneth Warren and Fred Whitehead. Ninety-one years old, Ferrini has been called "the last surviving Proletarian Poet." But Ferrini's work goes far beyond the social and political poetry he wrote as a young man, who came of age in the Great Depression, and which is amply represented in THE WHOLE SONG. Ferrini went on to write poetry in which the social, the personal and the spiritual are fused, always with a Modernist vision and in forms that evolved as Ferrini himself evolved, so that now he is appearing in e-magazines among the most avant-garde writers of the day. Though he grew up in the industrial city of Lynn, MA, Ferrini has made his home among the fishermen of Gloucester, MA for the past fifty-six years, exchanging one gritty, blue-collar community for another and writing as well about the wrenching changes in the fishing industry today as he wrote about the declining factories of Lynn in the 1930s and 40s. Like the working life in America he describes and lived, as a bench hand at GE and a framemaker in Gloucester, Ferrini's poetry is the real thing--hard, sharp and often heart-wrenching. Read it in THE WHOLE SONG and you will understand what William Carlos Williams meant when he said that poetry is news "for the lack of which people die."
