In einem ersten Schritt soll kurz die historische Ausgangssituation dargestellt, und das Leben Hugos beschrieben werden. Das Hauptaugenmerk der Seminararbeit liegt dann in der Frage nach der Notwendigkeit und der Durchführung von Hugos wissenschaftlicher Neuordnung anhand seiner Hauptwerke und insbesondere des Didascalicons.
Im Schlussteil werden die erarbeiteten Aspekte noch einmal kurz zusammengefasst. Desweiteren soll ein Vergleich der Schwierigkeit, der damaligen wissenschaftlichen Neuordnung in Bezug zu heutigen Problemen der Theologie, erstellt werden.
