The Gathering Wind: Hurricane Sandy, the Sailing Ship Bounty, and a Courageous Rescue at Sea, by Gregory A. Freeman

October 2012. A replica of the famous HMS Bounty, an eighteenth-century tall sailing ship, set a collision course with a storm that became the largest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic—a clash that proved to be one of the most unforgettable stories of Superstorm Sandy.

The Bounty, crewed by an eclectic team of seafarers and led by highly respected captain Robin Walbridge, departed from Connecticut as Sandy raced north. Walbridge, whose decisions decided the fate of his ship and crew, attempted to outmaneuver the storm by heading southeast. As violent gusts tossed the wooden vessel, the crew fought to save their ship—and themselves. When the storm finally overtook the ship, the crew was tossed into the churning sea.

The men and women of a Coast Guard station in North Carolina courageously flew into hundred-mile-per-hour winds to rescue the survivors of the Bounty. After hours of white-knuckle flying, they accomplished one of their most memorable rescues ever.

Based on interviews with Bounty survivors and unfettered access to Coast Guard rescue team members, The Gathering Wind is the most complete account of this heartbreaking, thrilling, and inspirational story.

From Booklist
Freeman, author of such books as The Forgotten 500 (2007), about a WWII mission to rescue Allied pilots stranded in Yugoslavia, turns his attention to the recent sinking of the Bounty, the tall ship that sailed into Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, most of its crew saved from certain death through a daring rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard. The author chronicles the events leading up to the disaster, the rescue itself, and the aftermath: the Coast Guard’s investigation into the Bounty’s sinking, during which there was much debate about who was responsible for the tragedy (the captain, who knowingly sailed into the path of a hurricane, or the ship’s owner, who was apparently pushing to keep the boat on a very tight schedule? Freeman is a fine nonfiction writer, with a sharp analytical eye, who always asks the important questions (in this case, What did the captain know, when did he know it, and why didn’t he tell his crew?). An intelligent, even-keeled, and dramatic look at a much-publicized maritime disaster. --David Pitt

Good read with some flaws
By joe-maryland
TLDR: Ship in bad shape sinks in Sandy, most of crew saved and now safe.

You likey know the basics from the news. An old wooden sailing ship in poor shape headed out into one of the biggest hurricanes in recorded history and - not to ruin the book or anything - sank. The book is a good read. You follow along as the crew struggles against all manner of malfunctions and horrible weather. You are right there with the USCG as they pull off an astounding rescue in horrific conditions. Every time the crew takes on a new mechanical malfunction you feel like screaming "Turn around! Don't Do it! Go back!" but you know it is too late. The Bounty was a slow ship in poor condition. This is not a fast moving disaster like a plane crash. It is more like spending 3 days watching someone slowly ride a bike toward a cliff and go right off it after passing about 50 warning signs.
So why not 5 stars? The book could have been better. The author is not a sailor himself and it shows every now and again. The confusion between AIS and radar is one such issue. Another issue is while the author knows it is a bad idea to do what they did, it takes someone with experience at sea to know how stupendously bad an idea their voyage was. Trying to run before a hurricane against the Gulf Stream and sandwhiched between the storm and Cape Hatteras isn't a bad idea. It is the WORST POSSIBLE idea. The opposing wind and current produces very steep and confused seas that can tear a well found ship apart and the Bounty was far from well found. The car analogy wouldn't be driving in a snow storm on bald tires, it would be driving 120 MPH in a snow storm on bald tires while drunk with both eyes closed while carrying 20 gallons of nitroglycerin. The author does make it clear this voyage was not a good idea, but it seems like the longer he talked to the crew the more he started to overlook some very obvious issues. The ship's bilge pumps were absolutely required to work well for this old leaky wood vessel to stay afloat *even at a dock*, let alone in a storm. While the ongoing problems were mentioned, apparently he did not press the crew as to why they carried on when the pumps hardly worked *before the storm*. This wasn't the usual Bounty level of duct-tape engineering, they were worse than usual. The skipper told the crew he had a plan to get around the storm. It would have worked. He totally ignored this and AIMED RIGHT FOR IT. The author does not dig enough - IMHO - as to why they passed chance after chance to miss the storm. At one point they could have ducked into Norfolk and missed the whole thing and only lost a few days at most. The worst part at the end of the book IMHO was his apparently siding with the crew against the parents of Claudine Christian. She died along with the captain and her parents are suing the owner of the Bounty. This women was the least experienced by far aboard the ship and trused the others. Her parents IMHO have every right to be furious with the organization and captain that let her down.

He's got some things wrong
By D. Faunt
This is a hard book for me to read. But he's got a couple of things wrong, so far. He's a bit confused about something I said. And he doesn't understand how the gensets were configured.

As the book progresses, he gets more things wrong.
It's pretty well written, and a gripping story, but I don't trust any of the "facts" presented, because of the things I know he got wrong.

In case you don't realize it, I'm one of the survivors and a character in the book.

Great Read!
By Amazon Customer
Gregory Freeman’s , The Gathering Wind, is awe inspiring for a number of reasons: it is well written, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, and one cannot help but be amazed at the heroics of the personnel involved. Greg does an outstanding job of storytelling. This is the encounter of the tall ship Bounty with hurricane Sandy. You become involved with the characters; you know what is going to happen and you agonize over the decisions of Captain Walbridge to turn west across the path of the hurricane . When the inevitable occurs, you are amazed at the Coast Guard risking ALL for the lives of the Bounty’s crew. I did not know that Coast Guard personnel got airsick. I thought there was a magic aura which enveloped Coast Guard fliers. I agonized with them as they flew over the wreckage of the Bounty, throwing up, and yet managing to continue their jobs---WOW!
This is an epic worth investigating. It is a revealing account of a recent incident (2012). When a writer can keep me stressed and tense throughout the reading, I know it is a great piece of writing.
