Delightful!

The title: In the Footsteps of ... is to be taken literally, this is a delightful wandering around Southeast Asia to places that beckon with literary reputation but are now humdrum, mostly off the tourist path, slowly falling apart, left behind by political and economic changes. Along the way, Barley meets the locals, smokes a cigarette with them, and chats them up. Barley likes them all, he records their conversations with a great sense of humour, and connects them with Raffles. This is not the authoritative biography of Stamford Raffles but it charmingly illuminates the man and his time. Mostly, this is a book about how to travel, how to open yourself to the charm of the easily overlooked, how to bring history to life. It is a fabulous funny book.

Just an average book

The city state of Singapore is the greatest achievement of Stamford Raffles, so I thought maybe the book will be about how all his experiences in Indonesia and Malaysia finally culminated in this. But there is very little about Singapore on this book. Also the writing style leaves much to be desired. Nigel Barley tried to trace Stamford's journey and he goes back and forth with present day and past quotes. Maybe that style will work for a documentary film, but as a book it does not come out too well. And most of the places he visits seems to be shabby looking shanty towns. It is informative still. So I give it an average rather than a below average.

A quirky style of writing.

This book is at times very interesting and at other times pretty frustrating and quirky. I do admire Nigel Barley's mission of following in Raffles paths and bringing modern day Malaya and Singapore to life. It's good to see whats happening now and get a grass roots commentary by the people who inhabit these areas. I would have to describe Mr. Barley's writing style as asymmetrical. Which is both good and bad. Quite a few times throughout I really did not know what he meant ! I would re-read, no luck. But, thats the deal. Other times, that very style made it quite interesting and different from a straight forward account. Overall, I did grow weary, and set it aside for days at a time, perhaps, its that kind of book. Since its history one can pick it up later with no loss of plot of course. In our huge literary world with thousands of authors we do need writers like Mr. Barley to cast a different way to relating the story. I haven't finished it yet but assuredly will and when I'm through I know I'll be satisfied overall. For that, I'm grateful for his hard work, travels, and interviews. Good job.
