Diese Aufzählungen scheinen bezüglich der neuzeitlichen Entwicklung charakteristische Attribute der Advents- und Weihnachtszeit geworden zu sein. Die Traditionen haben sich gewandelt. Das Fest der Liebe, der Freude, der Harmonie und der Familie ist heute ein leuchtendes Großereignis der gesamten abendländlichen Festkultur. An dieser Stelle wird vereinzelt theologische Kritik laut, die dem Weihnachtsfest vorwirft sich kommerziellen Dimensionen unterzuordnen und somit seine Bedeutung in einem Profanisierungsprozess einzubüßen. Denn die primäre Bedeutung des Weihnachtsfestes fundiert sich im christlichen Kirchenjahr und soll andächtig die Ankunft der Gnade Gottes beziehungsweise die Menschwerdung Gottes durch die Geburt Jesus zelebrieren.
Diese Hausarbeit wird deshalb versuchen die deutsche Weihnachtszeit in ihren christlichen Ursprüngen, sowie kalendarischen Eckpunkten im Kirchenjahr zu ergründen, dazu deren Brauchtümer und Attribute kontextual zu neuzeitlichen Entwicklungssträngen betrachten.
