Diese mediale Differenz ist daher Vorraussetzung für die Reflexion über jene Medien, gleichsam für die Unterscheidung zwischen diesen. Ebenso bildet diese Differenz die Grundlage für Medientheorien, im Allgemeinen für die Medienwissenschaft, mit anderen Worten: in der intermedialen Reflexion, welche auf Grund der Mediendifferenz entsteht, liegt der Ursprung der Medientheorie. „Insofern ist immer dann, wenn das neue Medium den bestehenden Probleme bereitet, mit dem Auftauchen medienwissenschaftlicher Erklärungsversuche zu rechnen.“ (Leschke 2003: 33)
Die zu analysierenden Texte bzw. Textausschnitte von Baudelaire, Newton und Frith behandeln allesamt das Thema der primären Intermedialität, indem sie das in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstandene neue Medium „Fotografie“ mit den damals bestehenden Künsten, vordergründlich mit der Kunst der Malerei, vergleichen.
