In this bittersweet, whimsical, slyly intelligent "what if" story by popular, prize-winning Italian novelist Duranti, NYU professor Martina Satriano lives a solitary life, devoted to her students, her workout routine and a bizarre contraption of her own construction that she calls "the Machine." Assembled around a tape recorder, the Machine records Martina's dreams and then wakes her each morning, merging its voice artfully (and quasi-magically) with her consciousness. A trip to Italy, where Martina attends her mother's funeral and visits her bourgeois sister Carmelina, gives the self-absorbed professorDand thereby the MachineDmuch food for thought. But it is Martina's New York adventures with a brace of Italian suitors that finally manage to jolt her out of her reliance on the mechanical ministrations of her bedside companion. First to come wooing is Prof. Sebastiano Cerignola. The sumptuous dinners Martina enjoys with him seem to engage her more than the man himself (recipes are provided at the book's conclusion). A miraculous twist of fate brings Constantino, an old childhood flame who may always have been her true love, back into Martina's life. Written as a fantasy lecture to the narrator's students in her European cultural history course, this novel is, as the title suggests, an exploration of the creative hemisphere of the brain. Like Italo Calvino's paean to three of the five senses, Under the Jaguar Sun, Duranti's novel offers up rewarding food for thought with the suggestion that, when ideas fail, there remain sumptuous recipes for just plain food. Duranti is a prizewinning Italian author, and it's high time for her to be introduced in the U.S. Her novels enjoy the same intellectual philosophy that makes Eco so popular, but they're far less dense. Left-Handed Dreams tells the story of an Italian academic living in America. After returning from her first trip back to her childhood home, she begins to doubt the nature of all she's doing. In the works has been a project to track her dreams. She goes to bed every night with the Machine, which is trained to bring her half-awake every morning so she can describe her dreams. What she discovers is that the dream world is not so very different from the waking world. In addition, she's a gourmet cook, incorporating recipes into her tale--and this is long before Under the Tuscan Sun (1996) or Ruth Reichl's Tender at the Bone (1998) made the genre of food literature so popular. Both novels are delightful, worthy of their Italian prizes, and the English translations do not diminish their worth. Michael Spinella

Nothing left for Left Handed Dreams

The Literary Group met October 27th to discuss Left Handed Dreams by Francesca Duranti, a rather clunky story retold by a supposedly brilliant self-absorbed Italian-born woman who makes good as an American university professor, but who maintains the lightweight theory that by recording her dreams and confirming that she was born left-handed she can prove how all of our identities are so close to being interchangeable, and once she shares this proof with the world all prejudices will go away. While it is unlikely that Duranti meant the narrator or those around her to be air-heads or air-head codependents, the brightest character in the book is a stray puppy who eats, sleeps, and poops.
The group voted the book a miserable 1.2 bookmarks with the humble footnote that if this is Duranti's latest book she should call it quits for writing.
