About the Author
Ernst Bohlmeijer is a senior lecturer at the University of Twente. He has a special interest in narrative psychology, in working with life stories in healthcare and in the role of mindfulness, acceptance and values in promoting mental health.
Monique Hulsbergen worked for 18 years as a psychologist/psychotherapist in the mental health sector. She is currently working freelance as a psychologist, writer and voice actor.

Bringing spiritual ideas to a practical level

The basic ideas of the book are not new in itself. `Living in the present moment' is a spiritual approach to life that has come to the western world a while ago. But while authors like Tolle (e.g. the power of now) or Kabat-Zinn (e.g. full catastrophe living) interested a more spiritual audience, this book brings the basic reflections to a very practical and easy applicable format that can even be applied in classroom or other forms of group work. Thereby the book bridges the highly spiritual roots of its ideas (stemming from Buddhism) with a very down-to-earth step-by-step guide for all kinds of audiences. The authors take the reader by the hand and provide a number of valuable exercises and practices to approach a mindful way of living.
Moreover, the books' structure is segmented in a way that only a choice of exercises (considered most useful and appropriate by the reader) may be applied in a large variety of contexts - with individuals or when working with groups. As for myself, I am using some of the exercises in my entrepreneurship classes with business students from diverse cultural backgrounds in form of inspirational sessions. This seems to be particularly useful, as a mindful approach is essential to staying focused in a constantly changing entrepreneurship environment.
The major value of the book may thus be seen in its practical, step-by-step format to living a life in the present moment - written in a format that is easily accessible to a large audience.
