To find a gay man’s killer, Mitch Tobin looks to the stars
Disgraced ex-cop Mitch Tobin is digging in his basement when he meets Ronald Cornell. A gay man from downtown Brooklyn whose partner was recently murdered, Cornell wants Tobin’s assistance in an investigation that the NYPD has declared hopeless. Tobin sympathizes—he once lost a partner of his own, a fellow cop whose death he was partially responsible for—and asks how he can help. Cornell has a list of six suspects, and all he needs to know about them is where they were born and at what time, so he can make their star charts. Tobin has just met the world’s first astrological detective.
He tries to keep out of Cornell’s harebrained investigation, but the cosmos has other plans. Whoever murdered Cornell’s lover is not through with killing, and Tobin must delve deep into the lives a group of friends even more marginalized than he is in order to keep this hapless astrologer from coming to harm.

About the Author
Donald E. Westlake (1933–2008) was one of the most prolific and talented authors of American crime fiction. He began his career in the late 1950s, churning out novels for pulp houses—often writing as many as four novels a year under various pseudonyms—but soon began publishing under his own name. His most well-known characters were John Dortmunder, an unlucky thief, and a ruthless criminal named Parker. His writing earned him three Edgars and a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.
Westlake’s cinematic prose and brisk dialogue made his novels attractive to Hollywood, and several motion pictures were made from his books, with stars such as Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson. Westlake wrote several screenplays himself, receiving an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of The Grifters, Jim Thompson’s noir classic.

Great story
By IDY Mark
Great mystery where the characters happen to be gay. That is important to the plot, but it is not really a "gay novel". It is a mystery not a romance. if you like whodunit stories this is a good one for you. Several suspects. Lot's of plot twists.

The Fault Is Not in Our Stars
By M. Buzalka
A Jade in Aries (1970), the fourth Mitch Tobin book from Tucker Coe (i.e., thriller master Donald Westlake), is notable for its portrayal of the gay community in the Brooklyn Heights section of New York, which is where the murder mystery takes place. Tobin, a former cop turned reluctant informal PI, is pulled into investigating the murder of a black gay man whose death the cops seem to have filed away without any real investigation. Astrology plays a part but not nearly to the extent promised by the title. Still, the mystery’s decent and Coe/Westlake does a credible job elevating his gay characters from being simply stereotypes. The book ends with a turn in Tobin’s outlook on life.

Good mystery for its time
By Anthony W. Donley
Good mystery for its time. The characters were obviously not what the author was used to, but like the detective in the book, he learns to understand and value the others. Interesting premise as well of solving a crime by horoscopes.
