Beware the Howlibird!
By Vic George 2K6
This is the second time that this story appeared in an English translation, its first being by Random House. It's basically the original version of the cartoon show episode where Papa Smurf creates a growth formula that accidentally mutates a plant which he has to dispose. Two Smurfs who are sent to dispose of the formula end up throwing it down into a ravine, where it mutates a baby bird into a deadly predator that goes after the Smurfs. Most of the story is spent with the Smurfs finding a way to bring the bird back to normal or at least down to a size where it can't threaten anyone.

Notably Smurfette doesn't appear in this version of the story, as this was written during a time when Smurfette was introduced as a guest appearance in the Smurf comic books and wouldn't become a permanent resident among the Smurfs until "The Baby Smurf". However, Gargamel does have a small appearance in the story, which the cartoon show episode wisely avoided as his appearance doesn't really add anything to it.

While the story is entertaining, my least favorite part of it in either English edition (Grouchy's "me, I don't like..." from the Papercutz edition notwithstanding) is the gag where a single Smurf has to go through the entire story being stuck wearing a towel, and when Papa Smurf has to do a bullfight with the Howlibird when it's stripped of its feathers, the village leader takes that poor Smurf's towel to do so.

Besides the main story, this book also has "The Smurf Express", where Handy builds a train to help the Smurfs ease the burden of delivering goods collected from the forest into the Smurf Village. Of course, Gargamel comes along and uses this invention against the Smurfs. This story idea also appeared in the cartoon show.

Kids May Fight Over This Book
By Becky A. McPherson
This is one of the books I decided to buy for the elementary school in a nearby town. I started buying books for the school as a hobby. I enjoy it, the kids benefit, so it works out well.

When I got this book in the mail, I looked inside of it, and was surprised to find it was done in comic book form. All the drawings were in little cells (squares) that read from left to right. All very colorful, but I thought, "Gee, this isn't what I expected." I thought single pictures would fill the pages. I felt a little disappointed, at first.

I actually took the time to sit down on the edge of the bed, put my reading glasses on and start reading the "comic book" inside. I was instantly amazed at the intelligence that had gone into the writing and drawings. I found myself giggling out loud several times--I'm in my 50's. This book is filled with clever humor.

It starts off with Grandpa Smurf trying to create a fertilizer. He is almost eaten by a plant which goes carnivorous when the fertilizer is applied. In trying to dispose of the fertilizer, a couple of the younger smurfs drop it into a ravine, and accidentally spill it onto a baby bird. This is how the monster Howlibird is created.

Although I didn't finish the book, because I wanted to get it to the kids as soon as possible, what I read of it was delightful. If the kids don't fight over this book when they go to the library, I would be surprised. It was fun, and a good way to interest young folks in reading, to boot.

Kroxelikrax. Enough said!
By Ashtar Command
“The Smurfs and the Howlibird” is one of the best Smurf adventures. As a kid, I actually thought it was exciting and full of suspense. I can still understand why I felt that way. The Smurfs – nice blue midgets living in the quasi-utopian Smurf Village – are attacked by a mutant bird with evil intentions. The Howlibird destroys the entire village and the bridge across the River Smurf, and probably wants to eat the tiny elfs for breakfast! The Smurfs take their stand in an abandoned stone tower built by humans (the plot seems to be set in the Middle Ages), but the crazed raptor besieges it. The only way to neutralize the Howlibird and save the day is to steal a magical elixir from the Smurf's greatest enemy, the wizard Gargamel…

The French original title is almost priceless:”Les Schtroumpfs et le Cracoucass”. The Swedish translation is called “Smurferna och Kroxelikrax”. Just so you know!
