About the Author
Dr. Bhagavan “Doc” Antle is the founder and director of T.I.G.E.R.S., The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species and the RSF, The Rare Species Fund. He is widely recognized as one of the foremost animal trainers in the world.
Thea Feldman has written and edited hundreds of children’s books. She has also worked at the Wildlife Conservation Society where she researched and wrote about the animals in the Society's five urban wildlife parks in New York City.
Barry Bland started his photographic career as a sports photographer and now specializes in animal based editorial features. His work has been published in hundreds of national newspapers and magazines around the world.

A Worthy Addition to Your Library

I found this book in a local public library and my 2 year old daughter LOVES it. Suryia and Roscoe are adorable and the pictures are excellent. I think it is important to note that other reviewers feel like this book encourages animal exploitation or mistreatment while failing to bring sufficient attention to the plight of the orangutang. To this, I say the following: 1)If I had not seen this book and been drawn to the lovely photos (posed or otherwise), I would never have thought twice about endangered animals. As a big dog person, I really haven't heard much about the plight of other kinds of species (except maybe dolphins or whales) but this book really caught my attention in a positive way. Ordinarily, rescue groups can be overly depressing (depicting horrible abuse) and may discourage attention. Roscoe and Suryia's story is inspiring without being too forceful and this book is a wonderful, light introduction to the idea of endangered animals without any garishness. 2) Just because Suryia and Roscoe might be trained, does not mean they are mistreated or 'unnatural.' My dog is trained to do tricks but I do NOT abuse him or force him to behave against nature. 3) Instead of discouraging the purchase of this book, let us be proactive and support an organization that is designed to protect engangered animals and raise awareness about the destruction of their natural habitats! For those among us who bellyache that this book exploits animals, I ask this - what organization have you formed that benefits these species? If you have taken such steps, then allow me to make a well-deserved donation. Otherwise, let us all join together and support those who actually try to change things.
If you are looking for a sweet story, good pictures and a friendly tone that is appropriate for young children - this is the book for you.

Heartwarming story that educates kids on friendship and conservation!

The tale of Suryia, an orangutan, and Roscoe, a hound dog, is so heartwarming and very educational. These two unlikely pals met in an almost unbelievable manner, and they have been great friends ever since. Their story helps kids understand that sometimes friends find you, and even when your new friend is the last creature you'd expect to befriend you - well, there they are, holding out the hand of friendship (in this case, with a monkey biscuit enclosed!)
In addition to the great story and wonderful pictures of these animals and the life they live (they have another pal who is an African elephant!!!) there is a great message about conservation, helping kids understand the decisions every person makes can - and DO - effect the habitat of many other creatures. Learn all about palm oil and it's role in deforestation, and about the lives of one unusual orangutan and his best friend, a once homeless hound dog. You won't be sorry you bought this book!
