Die vorliegende Arbeit soll sich mit der so genannten „Margareten – Tragödie“ aus Johann Wolfgang von Goethes „Faust“ befassen. Zugrunde gelegt wird „der Tragödie erster Teil“, der nach dem „Urfaust“ und nach „Faust. Ein Fragment“ im Jahre 1808 veröffentlicht wurde und damit ein Weimarer Drama ist. Im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern trägt er die Gattungsbezeichnung „Tragödie“, in der es unter anderem um die Beziehung zwischen Margarete und Faust geht. „Die Margareten – Tragödie“ ist eine Thematik, die auf Goethe zurückgeht, da sie nicht durch den tradierten Fauststoff motiviert ist. Sie zeigt einen anderen Weg der Entgrenzung, den der Liebe. Wie sich dieser Weg darstellt, das heißt wie sich die Liebe anbahnt und entwickelt und worin schließlich der tragische Aspekt der Margareten – Handlung besteht, soll das Thema der Arbeit sein. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf Margarete, deren Entwicklung thematisiert werden soll. Aus ihrer Sicht wird die Tragödie geschildert. Der Weg vom naiven Kind zur selbst bestimmenden und frei entscheiden könnenden Frau ist darzulegen. Dabei soll auch besonderes Augenmerk auf die unterschiedliche Sprecherbezeichnung Margarete - Gretchen gelegt werden, wobei aber nicht die historische Ableitung des Namens erörtert werden soll. Ob Goethe nun die Heilige Margarete oder die Kindsmörderin Susanna Margaretha Brandt als Vorbild für seine weibliche Protagonistin genommen hat, spielt für diese Interpretation keine Rolle, da es sich hier um die literarische Margarete, eine eigene Figur handelt. Es geht hier vielmehr darum zu zeigen, weshalb die Namen in der Regieanweisung von Margarete zu Gretchen und umgekehrt hin und her wechseln.
Bei der Bearbeitung der Fragestellung sollen Ergebnisse der vorhandenen Sekundärliteratur nicht als gegeben hingenommen, sondern hinterfragt werden, so dass sich beim Abschluss dieser Arbeit ein neues Margareten – Bild etablieren könnte. Ist Margarete wirklich die verführte Unschuld, die dem Wahnsinn verfällt oder ist auch eine andere Interpretation möglich?
Um nun kurz auf die Vorgehensweise einzugehen, so wird mit der Tragödiendefinition begonnen, wobei danach auf Margaretes Entwicklung und ihre Liebe zu Faust eingegangen wird. Das Schlusskapitel soll im Anschluss die Begründung der Tragödie darlegen.
2 Tragödie
Die Tragödie ist neben der Komödie die wichtigste Gattung des europäischen Dramas. „In ihrem Zentrum steht ein schicksalhafter, unvermeidlicher und unlösbarer Konflikt, der zum Untergang des tragischen Helden führt.“ Entstanden ist die Tragödie in Griechenland aus dem Kultfest des Dionysos. Sophokles, der Werke wie „König Ödipus“ und „Antigone“ gedichtet hat, lässt in seinen Tragödien das Individuum hervortreten, das in einen „unvermeidlichen, tragisch-schuldhaften Gegensatz zu den in den Göttern verkörperten heiligen Ordnungen“ gerät .
