In seinem von Liebe geprägten Tun wurde Gott erfahrbar. In ihm offenbarte sich Gott den Menschen. Er starb für uns am Kreuz. Doch wurde Jesus von Gott aus den Toten erweckt und so mit seinem Lebensprogramm der Liebe bestätigt. Menschen, die von all diesen Geschehnissen tief getroffen waren, verkündigten und verkündigen diesen Jesus bis heute als Sohn Gottes, als Kyrios und Christus.
Doch wie sieht die andere, die historische Seite des nachösterlichen Christus aus? Wer war Jesus von Nazaret? Was ist an den uns überlieferten Worten und Taten Jesu historisch tatsächlich wahr? Diese Frage nach dem historischen Jesus ist hochaktuell. Zahlreiche Bücher, seien es welche wissenschaftlicher Art oder Romane, beschäftigen sich mit einer Biographie Jesu. Auch eine Reihe von Filmen zu seinem Leben ist gedreht worden.
Diese Arbeit setzt sich mit dem Problem der in den letzten Jahren kontrovers diskutierten Fragestellung nach dem hisorischen Jesus auseinander. Sie will einen Beitrag zum Verständnis jener Fragestellung leisten und fragmentarisch analysieren, was wir heute von Jesus als historischer Person wissen.
Dazu werden in einem ersten Teil die Quellenmaterialien, die für eine Rekonstruktion des irdischen Lebens Jesu zur Verfügung stehen, analysiert; also die Grundlagen für die Fragestellung betrachtet. Der zweite Teil stellt die Methodik für die Suche nach dem historischen Jesus vor – die historisch-kritische Rückfrage nach selbigem – sowie deren Grenzen und Möglichkeiten. Aus den Ergebnissen des ersten und zweiten Teils erfolgt zum Schluss eine skizzenhafte Darstellung des historischen Jesus.
